Eryan rushed to the upper deck; contrary to what one might expect he managed to avoid colliding with other students - quite a feat considering how packed the hallway was. What is more, as he slithered through the crowd, he kept an eye out so that Vera would not bump into anyone.
"Totally worth it," he exhaled sharply once they reached their destination.

Character:
Gemma Ballibis, Heraldus Macropedius
Location:
Collegium, Grounds
The grounds of the Collegium were a flurry of work. Recently hedged and vibrant grass was trampled underfoot as teachers bustled about the walled in courtyard. Arcane orbs were being conjured into the sky and two large dividers made of rope were being assembled to try and corral the students into their proper groups. A large pedestal was being assembled upon a small stage directly before the school, said pedestal in fact having the character of floating mid air with several steps doing much the same leading to it. Several wizards were in the process of trying to balance this pedestal, who had the unfortunate inclination to lean form one side to the other like a seesaw as it was righted, unbalanced, and righted once more.
A tall, trim and rigid man with greasy black hair and wearing a pair of blue and grey almost too well fitting robes wandered about. His nose, a most prominent feature which balanced a pair of small reading glasses who had the strangest insistence of trying to escape down their perch until pushed back into place, kept turning about like an accusing finger to the scene about him. He looked more like a clerk than wizard, but since it takes all kinds, it reasons that this alone did not except him from the school of magics. Even if he seemed to scorn the usual fashions of pointy hats and overly large sparkling shoulder pads.
"Get those orbs in place! In place I say!" he snipped, voice magnified by magic to carry over the commotion. "And Youuuuuuuu! Who's in charge of keeping the platform afloat? No don't let it drop! Don't I say! Keep it up! I'll find someone else. And has anyone seen where the shadow and snipes Miss Skivvers got off to?"
A light chuckle from behind the speaker preceded a friendly hand placing itself on his shoulder. "Is this it then Heraldus?" a comforting, worldly voice asked. Heraldus turned his head about, and beheld the headmaster.
Gemma Ballibis had the precise look of a wizard, so long as one's idea was that of an elderly man with many wrinkles, sporting a long white beard and hair like someone might equate with a fat man in red who arrived during a particularly cold month of the year. Unlike said man, however, he was tall and wore robes with astrological signs and symbols stitched in silver all over. Said clothes seemed to be in some undetectable way a bit out of sorts, but whenever one tried to put a finger on the cause it eluded them, which vexed Heraldus to no end. A flat topped cap sat on his head while from beneath a pair of bushy white eyebrows sat over a pair of bright eyes.
"Headmaster," Heraldus greeted firmly. "We're nearly ready, but it seems some of the teachers haven't arrived yet, and damned if I can find them in here."
Gemma's face dipped into a light frowned. "Hm. Well, I'm sure they'll turn up. Is that the stage? Seems they're having some trouble with the pedestal though."
"They are," the deputy headmaster grunted. "Blasted new stuff. Can't seem to fix..." he trailed off as Gemma waved a hand at the pedestal, causing the device to right itself at once, bobbing lightly in the air in readiness.
"...Very good then, very good," Heraldus grunted, nudging his glasses back before his eyes. "Alright, we may get this place ready yet. Assuming the others arrive."
The older wizard nodded and clapped his junior on the shoulder. "Capital dear boy, capital!"

"If you're a teacher why did you take the boat?" Mark asked as Richard began to sort threw his pouches.
"Drank to much and blacked out. Guess it was easier to throw me on here then anything else." Richard replied pulling out a purple crystal.
"That's kinda crazy." Mark replied.
"Crazy is relative to the beholder or something along those lines." Richard said as he placed the gem within a socket in his arm sending a pulse of magic down his mechanical arm. "Cya in class." He added and clapped his hands and with a crack of thunder he was gone leaving Mark in shock.
"How did he do that?" He said walking up to the now vacant spot.
Richard reappeared in the middle of the school grounds with another crack of thunder. "Wow. This is going to be fun." He said looking around.

Heraldus narrowed his eyes at Richard. He did not like the man. He was messy, undisciplined, practically uncivilized, and flouted the rules as though they did not apply to him. Had he been given the option, Grindgear wouldn't have come within a hundred miles of the Collegium before getting a strongly worded letter saying he should not. And if he ignored that (unconscionable!) he would be teleported to the edge of the barrier and made walk home.
But it wasn't his decision. It was the headmasters. But damned if he would just accept that. "And why were you on the boats when you should have been here preparing? Why?"

Richard suddenly gasped in mock horror. "How dare you assume I'm not prepared." He said then turned and whistled before turning back to the man. A few seconds later two mechagnomes came running threw the crowd and stopped before Richard. "Clink, Clank how goes the preparations?" He asked.
"All current classrooms have met acceptable standards and the part houses are full of all requested parts and metals." Clank rattled off.
"And the greenhouses?" Richard asked.
"They all have the needed plants and have met the expectaions of the alchemy teachers." Clink said.
"Anything else?" Richard asked Heraldus.

"That is the current, I am speaking of the past tense. Why did you get on the boat instead of being at your station, Grindgear? Why? Had there been an emergency, we couldn't reach you due to the barrier about the school preventing teleportation," Heraldus said sharply, pushing the glasses back up his nose where they had decided to try and descend.

"Excuse me." Clink said stepping forward in front of Richard. "The reason he was on the ship was because Mrs. Greyfang put him there. The two of them where in the town last night getting the last of there supplies when they decided to stay the night at the inn. Sadly Richard here is a very heavy sleeper and we where unable to awake him this morning and we found it easier to just set him on the ship so when he awoke he wouldn't be to far behind scheduled and it left the three of us more time to help out around the grounds. Also had there been a problem Mrs. Greyfang could easily get a hold of Richard that normal means couldn't." The robot said.
"Yeah what he said." Richard added.

Character
: Stefan Meszaros
Location
: Collegium, Grounds
Another member of the faculty was standing near the three bickering men, his posture rigid, the cold, unblinking gaze of his dark, deep-set eyes directed somewhere right above the others' heads; though he was hardly of extraordinary height, barely taller than six feet, he carried himself with an air of elevation above any and all present.
This man was Stefan Meszaros, one of the taskmasters of the Battle Magic department. He had a narrow, pallid face with an emaciated, hungry look and features so sharp it seemed as if his bones were ready to cut through his thin, parchment-like skin. His scalp was bereft of hair, covered by an intricate network of tattoos instead that ran down across his neck and beyond, disappearing behind his uniform.
He wore a long, quilted gray jacket with a high collar and two wide coattails, black breeches and knee-high leather boots with steel-capped toes. The jacket was girded by a wide, red silken sash, its color so vivid one would not be unlikely to think it had just been dipped in fresh blood. Over the sash Stefan wore two narrow leather belts with steel buckles, with three satchels and a barbed lash attached to them; the weapon of torture coiled comfortably on his left side, where he could stroke it with his long, nimble fingers. Another leather belt was slung diagonally across his chest, supporting a wooden staff hanging on his back. The staff had a narrow, long blade attached to one end, while on the other, the one that rose above his right shoulder, a murky red sphere the size of a human fist was affixed. Stefan's knees, right elbow and the right shoulder were protected by steel armor, with the shoulderguard decorated by a serrated half-circle fast at a forty-five degrees angle against the arm. On both hands he wore thick leather gloves; both were fingerless, yet the fingers of his right hand were encased in sectional talon-like casing.
Stefan Meszaros had been at the headmaster's side since morning, a silent shadow, yet he did not make his presence known, neither by deed nor by word. Until his pupils arrived, the taskmaster was content with doing nothing.

The deputy headmaster's lip curled slightly. "Very well. But do try, mister Grindgear, not to cause the actual teachers distraction with your antics, else I will write you up to the headmaster." He nodded, pushing his glasses back up automatically. "I will indeed."
Gemma breathed deeply, gazing at the floating podium he would soon be addressing the students from. "By Tyr that looks fine, doesn't it Stefan?"

"Check it out!" Veraldine called to Eryan, pointing at several long docks near the edge of the lake. They stretched out like several long fingers waiting for a handshake, several smaller boats bobbing nearby on the opposite side, where they had been stashed in readiness of the approaching canal ships.
"Oi!" a sailor from the front of the ship shouted, one doing so below and into the hall for good measure. "Grab your bags! We'll be arriving soon!"

"Why, headmaster," Stefan inclined his head politely, his voice soft and insinuating; it presented a sharp contrast to his outlandish appearance, and would not be out of place belonging to a gentle, kind person. Listening to it could almost make one forget about the hunger burning in the taskmaster's eyes.
"I do believe it shall more than just impress the simpletons we are about to educate," he stretched his thin lips into a smile.

"Hmm! Perhaps. But they are here to lose that simple mindedness, my friend. And I have every intention for each of them to walk out of here with magic in their veins, knowledge in their heads, and steel in their backs." The headmaster nodded firmly and crossed his arms. "They are the future, after all. Best make sure they will have the tools to handle it."
