I have no idea why or who started it, but that's what we do. It's not weird to us because we've done it for years. We mean nothing by it other than just a friendly term.
I'm not saying we should throw the word around either. I guess what I'm saying is, for lack if better words, people should just get over it.
What's stopping us from make it just another word? We could just go to where using that word would be the same as calling someone bro or dude. If people stop treating it as a slur, it wouldn't have as much if an impact.
But I'm not saying to just all out start using it. At the current rate we could possibly be heading in the direction, we could find ourselves using that would with no negative connotations.

I hardly think it's discrimination for a race to not be okay with another race using a slur against them.
I completely agree with you here. Like I said earlier, no word should be used in a derogatory manner. That's not what I'm arguing against. In fact, I honestly don't think ANYONE should be using the N word, considering its history. But, that's not what I'm discussing. I'm not discussing the word. I'm discussing the arbitrary rules that society has placed on the races. It's acceptable for a black person to say it in a non derogatory manner, but unacceptable for a white person to say it in the same non derogatory manner. I'm saying that making it ok for one group of people and not ok for a different group, based on nothing more than skin color, is wrong.

But it isn't arbitrary. It isn't a rule. It hasn't been placed on races.
It's an insult that some people don't mind hearing from some other people. That needn't be any of your business.

Yeah but that goes both ways Elura. Like what MyTie said earlier about his chicken being too black, then the black guy got all enraged about him saying that.
We can saying something with no malice intent, but unless that person takes it like that it won't change anything.

The guy was wrong to get upset in that instance. Anecdote isn't data so this doesn't demonstrate anything significant.
Society works on compromise. Sometimes you might need to curb your behaviour to get along with others who also have to do the same. Siblings living in the same house see the microcosm of this as they have to learn to get along or spend years fighting until the older one moves out. It's no hardship for us to consider our words before we say them, we do it every day.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

Racism affects us all. White. Black. Indian. Asian. Jew. Every race is hurt by it. There are people of every ethnicity experiencing genocide, or have experienced genocide in the past. Even
whites
. And that's just the current murders of white people at the hands of racism. Whites have been massacred before. Look at what the Moors did to the Italians. The truth is, every race, throughout history, has been reduced through brutal force, based on the color of their skin. It has to stop.

Rousing stuff, I'm sure, but how it it relevant?

Heck yeah! Let's stop killing people and discriminating based on religion. I concur whole heartedly.

That is not the point of this discussion (or at least it wasn't), the issue is why it should not be acceptable for a word to be a slur when used by one race, and not a slur when used by another. As was pointed out, that is BY DEFINITION, discrimination.
You either "reclaim" the word, and accept its use by all, or you keep the use of the word as taboo by all.
Even if black people do discriminate against you, it wont affect your life greatly because white people are still the ones in power.
Oreally
?

One example does not a point make.
Using the US as an example, in large, whites are
more highly educated
and in
higher paid jobs and higher ranks in companies than their non-white counterparts.
This indicates that there are less opportunities for people "of color" (ie. non-white). This is
why
there are programs in place to help non-whites enter the workplace and get better education, through financial or other support - because
it is generally more difficult for them
, which is what these figures are indicating.
In fashion and media, whites are still the most dominant ethnicity being represented - very disproportionately, eg. in NY fashion week I believe
over 80% of all the models were white
. Halle Berry is still the only black woman to ever win an Oscar for best leading actress, and I doubt that's because there are not enough talented black actresses out there - it's because there aren't enough roles in Hollywood's big productions. This is overall indicative of some kind of viewpoint in American society at large that being white is still more desirable than being "of color" even though the non-white population is significantly larger than the representation given by fashion.
So I'm sorry, but if you're complaining about discrimination of not being allowed to say a word (which, Thror already pointed out, there are words not to do with race that are just not said outside of certain people) when non-whites are objectively still discriminated against in the workplace and education, then please go cuddle your victim complex elsewhere because I really don't have time for it.

The idea that its somehow more abhorrent for white people to say the word &*!@#$ than it is to say ^&*! or @#$% or any other profanity (I just realized how funny that's going to look with the filter) is stupid. If your saying it with racial hate then that's bad, but I don't believe it's some special kind of evil. As far as it being more socially acceptable for blacks to say it than whites. It's kind of like using the word "retard". You can call your friend retarded in a joking way, but say it about somebody whose actually mentally handicapped, and that's bad.

Funny thing about the N word............. in spanish, rather than be a slur, its a term of AFFECTION :P
I swear to god I'm serious. Negrito (which is how the Nword is in spanish) is a term of affection and endearment to someone of dark skin, rather than be a slur.
This is why Agatha Christie's famous novel "Ten Little Ni****s" still has the same title in spanish even after in english it has been changed twice. In spanish its still called "Los Diez Negritos"

Oh lord not this again. That movie was going to suck ass regardless of who they got to play the roles. They tried to cover too much in too short a time, it was poorly written, and Avatar is just one of those things that doesn't translate well onto the big screen. Even if the actors were all Asian, the movie still would have sucked.

Of course it still would have; but at least it would have been more in line with the actual show it was taken from.
