This is an interesting topic - one of the lecturers at my university actually specialises in cyberbullying and stuck up one of her published papers on a wall (I didn't read it in its entirety though). One theory is that of deindividuation, which is espoused by Zimbardo. Basically it goes that if you can reduce someone to no longer appear human, a perfectly normal person can have no empathy with the deindividuated human. In Rwanda this took the form of repeated propaganda calling Tutsis "cockroaches". This has two components actually: once a person loses their own guise, they no longer conform to the social role set for them: hence tattoos and face masks facilitate violence. On the internet, there are few identifying features of another person (salient ones would include facial expressions, as fear and pain are triggers for non-psychopathic humans to halt their course of action) or the individual trolling, so both of these effects come into play.
Another aspect of trolling is transgressionism of the style of DuSade. Testing societies limits. In some senses it can serve a useful purpose: white and grey hat hackers, Daniel Ellsberg, Mark Felt, the consciousness raising feminists of the 70s: I'd classify them all into a similar category. Other people have different limits for provocation.
In other instances (such as
this
) I can't detect any empathy even outside of their stomping grounds or any motivator other than personal gain. I'd attribute that to psychopathy. Someone in the Bandura school may say inadequate socialisation, incapacity to form meaningful relationships.
Edit: Oh and of course there are ingroup and outgroup conflicts, exacerbated by deindividuation. That'd explain forum invasion and whanot.

There are 4 kinds of people:
1. Those that get plenty of sex but live otherwise pathetic, unsatisfying lives. These people are too busy having sex to troll.
2. Those that get no sex but live awesome lives. I fall into this category. I'm too busy living an awesome life to troll.
3. Those that get plenty of sex AND live awesome lives. They are so busy having sex and being awesome that they don't know what trolling is.
4. Those that never get sex and lead boring, pathetic lives. These people are emotionally fragile and crave approval from other people. They may seek this in numerous ways, but if they have internet access they just might use their keyboard and anonymity to pretend that they're the tough guy that they wish they were.

Depends on your definition of trolling.
I play mild, harmless, pranks on friends/people on the internet, that some people could call trolling. Those are merely for the fun of it, and most of the time, all parties involved get a laugh out of it, which is my intent.
More serious, or malicious, forms of trolling, though, are most likely done to get a reaction from people, as was previously stated. Or to garner attention for the one who committed the trolling.
I was just wondering, Elhonna, if you got my email regarding a question suggestion, and, if you can recall if it's been asked before or not.

Because it's fun. Trolling people in games are some of the best time I've had.

@Kris- I did- I wasn't sure how much discussion there was in it, because while it's an interesting concept, the way you laid it out there wasn't really anything someone COULD do to affect it.

What is this trolling you talk about?
No but in all seriousness, pretty much this.

#213- If society crumbled, what would be the hardest thing to lose?
I'm not asking about people- any people who you would miss could have survived it with you. I'm talking about utilities, manufactured products, services, etc.

The internet.
top of the list, but wouldn't be the only thing.
Chocolate pudding, portable music, electricity (We've become too dependent on it to not have it now) and VIDEOGAMES!
