Okay, so why was that not asked until 198 pages into the thread? Why was the OP about something completely unrelated?
le sigh.
Anyway...
If you could pick one company to completely shut down, which one and why?
The Federal Reserve. The 12 Federal Reserve banks can still exist so long as they are privatized, but the cartel must be disbanded and its control over the supply of US Dollars must be terminated.
Or an industry, if you think it's more appropriate.
I'd go with, not the Arts & Entertainment industry as a whole, but the sector of it that uses copyrights to maintain monopolies on media content. Everything should be public domain. Thus, media content would be funded and generated based on artistic or educational merit, rather than on projected sales. Companies other than MS could make operating systems other than Windows that run Windows programs, etc.
Note: this does not apply to patents on useful gadgets.
any website that supports cheating spouses. I can't remember what commercial it was, but it basically said "Oooh, your husband or wife not giving you attention? These people will," and how discrete they are so you won't get caught. How can anyone live with themselves, supporting garbage like that?
These are people who WOULD CHEAT ANYWAY. Ashley Madison just makes them pay for doing so.
If we want to eliminate the cheating problem, maybe we should focus on fixing broken marriages.
the tobacco and oil industries.
But, if you shut down the oil industry, that pretty much takes care of all the others.
OH GOD NO!
Are you kidding? Do you have ANY idea how critical oil is to every aspect of our lives? I mean, it would be one thing to replace every gasoline-powered automobile in existence with a bicycle or electric car. But what about air travel? That kerosene doesn't come from a genie's arse, you know. And do you know where plastic comes from? How about Vaseline? Asphalt? Laundry detergent?

QOTD = Question of the Day
The question changes every day.
The title changes every day.
There is a new post I make every day with the current question to bring everyone up to speed.
That's why it's listed as #205.
Also, this is generally a laid back thread where we all get to know each other. It's not really a debate thread. People probably aren't going to go back and forth with you about their opinions and points of view in life, because that's not what the thread is about.

Yeah, I know. That's why I said that shutting down the oil industry would take out pretty much every other major industry. We're far too reliant on oil, and we need to break that or we'll end up running out and things will be much worse than would be if the industry stopped existing right now. Maybe not shutting it down, but we should at least exploring other resources more-so than we are now.
Am I saying that most of us would be able to adapt to such a situation if it were to be shut down? No. Not even me, probably. But, those who'd survived would learn and adapt, and thus, make a better future for our species.

Not really. There are relationships where the pair has unusual sexual appetites and they seek out sexual relationships with other people. Heck, there are married couples that go to swingers parties. You could argue though that this behaviour does not fall under "infidelity", because it is not "cheating" when all the people involved are totally fine with it.
There are also cases where the couple is separated for an extended period of time, and one, or both of them slip. It doesn't have to end the relationship. There was an entire episode about this in M*A*S*H, where one soldier wanted to dump his wife because she slept with a man while he was in Korea, and I think there were a lot of very reasonable arguments in it and it ended pretty well.
Oh, but from my personal standpoint, it most probably would.

To set the tone of the question- infidelity would not include anything with the other person's permission. I may not understand it, but that's a choice made by everyone involved. I'm talking about behind someone's back, or in spite of knowing you're hurting their feelings if they do know.

Depends. I would *probably* say yes though.

I'm curious, Boron- why do you think it's more forgivable the first time than the second?

If its not consensual (Like swingers, or a 3way relationship), then it depends on 2 factors.
1: Is the cheater repentant for what s/he did? If they went behind their spouse's back, and had an affair, but then they regret it, and personally come clean, then that shouldn't end a relation.
2: If it doesn't happen again. The cheated spouse decides to give them a second chance (IMO Everyone deserves at least 1 second chance). If they waste it, dump their asses, they're not worth it. IF they take this second chance and never cheat again, then I don't see why it should end a relationship.
Having said that, if there is cheating in a relationship, its a big red warning flag that something is not right with it, and if both sides decide to give it a second go, they need marriage counseling, or some form of help, to get their relationship back on track. Something on the Status Quo has to change.

I can't speak for other people but it would end it for me.
Yeah, same. Probably, anyway.
