Does WOW really begin at 85?

No. WoW pretty much drops dead the second you hit 85. The stark contrast of "Welcome to Failureclysm, there's nothing left for you to do, you baddie." really shines once you ding 85.
What?
You have daily quests, reps to grind, gear to get, PvP to do, achievements to get. There's a lot to do at 85.
Porcell, look over the guy's posts....that's standard for his 'Blizzard is fail, kill Ghostcrawler' mentality.

Thanks guys for all your advice and helpful hints, you have made it clear to me as to what i have to look forward to and what to expect as a lvl 85, which is fantasitc. I do believe it is up to the player in terms of deciding which avenue to take when completely lvl'd as everybody has their own unique play style and individual prefrence.
I am looking forward to the raids and dungeons, however am a bit nervous as people do tend to take the game quite seriously and are not affraid to voice thier opions whether it be in a kind constructive way or just plain bold and insensitive. In any respect when gaming I treat fellow wowers with the same respect and courtesy as I would like to be treated no matter how novice or experienced I am.
Just FYI Loneworrior :) I am female lol
I stand corrected.... Carianna :).
Just between you and me...of all the players, that I had the pleasure of their company, I enjoyed my woman members the most. They were more even tempered, courteous, dedicated and understanding. They did the little things to make everything better for the guild. Simple things like organizing the bank tab...filling the raid bank tab with flasks and stuff for guild raids and keeping an eye on things when I wasn't around. Did I mention they were good players as well. :)
I made sure all the guys watched what they said in front of them and to treat them with the up most courtesy.
Hope you find the same. Good luck to you.

If only we could sticky this into the brains of some of the people who play this game.

I feel the opposite. Being an 85 is OK for a month or so while you max out your PvP gear, and finish up Tol Barad and Firelands. After that, it is all repetitive and basically the only choice, is go work on achievements.
I always end up 'abandoning' my 85's and start up a new one to level up.

Honestly at 85, the game becomes a part time job. Raid schedules, dailies, AH swindling. Where as lvling, you can just kinda take your time.
From my experience anyway.

Honestly, I've never reached further than 20, being on trial for the moment, however I did play on a friends account just yesterday, she has several 85's, but the only thing I thought really fun was to randomly fly around on her Azure dragon and find archeology spots.. Everything else was pretty boring IMHO.
Now mind you, I've never done a real raid and the only dungeon's I've gone through is WC, RC and DM... But I still don't think I'd enjoy being lvl 85 once I got the exploring achievements.

I'll try to brighten it up a little, so you don't feel becoming lvl 85 will be your nightmare if you decide to subscribe and level beyond lvl 20. First time at 85 should be fun for a while =)
The first few times you run "real dungeons" and raids you'll probably enjoy it, they are much more challenging, require tactics and teamwork, and the loot will actually improve your character and get you closer to your goals.
There reputation, professions, achievement etc, both important for improving your character and more optional for the completionists.
PvP(Player vs Player) will be at a whole new level, where you work you're way up to better equipment and higher personal skill. Arenas will be open, where you can fight in small teams of 2, 3 or 5. Here teamwork and coordination is extremely important for the higher ranks.
Guilds. This is a very important part of the game for most players, which will really bind you to the game. It's often like a community of loads of close friends. You'll be able to join one as soon as you subscribe(Not trial).
Seriously I won't be able to fit everything in this post, there's loads to do. So don't see level 85 as a dark cloud. =) If you find lvl 85 boring after a few months you can always start leveling a new character and take a completely different route, in new zones with new quests. =)
Good luck!
