Solo PvE and shred

Hi! :)
I`m playing a feral druid (cat), and would like some advise about the use of shred. As I play solo pve I find shred very hard to use; getting behind a target who is focused on you is not easy. So, what filler should I use instead of shred to gain combo-points? Spam mangle? Or is there a trick to using shred in solo pve that I just don`t know? Please advise.

You can get behind targets with the help of stuns. Therefore there's 2 ways to get some use out of shred while soloing, namely
and
Maim
. However, most kitties don't bother with it and just spam
glyphed
mangle. I however find it brings some nice variation to the leveling process ^_^

Thank you both for the answers. I honestly had not thought of using the stuns and then Shred. Since I have the Mangle glyph I might just use Mangle. But I will definitly try the stun and shred-method to see what I fancy. :)

Thanks again for the answers. :)
I`m only lvl 64, but trying out the feral cat on mobs in Zangarmarsh has left me doing the following:
Charge - Rake - Mangle - Tigers Fury - Mangle x 2-3 - Ferocious bite (toss in a Faerie fire on high-health mobs). I use Ferocious bite instead of Rip as a end-rotation move; in dungeons I`ll use Rip.
After trying it out I thought that the stun and shred-method just was unnecessarily complicated for mobs when just questing. When I do dungeons on the other hand, Shred will be easy to use.
I have one point in Stampede, but have forgotten (again) to incorporate Ravage in my rotation. Should I perhaps put Ravage in before my first Mangle?
(I`ve only just changed from playing Moonkin, so please have some patience if I seem to miss some of the points you are making. Even if I might (havent checked it) do more damage as a Moonkin at the moment because of my lack of experience, I must say Feral seems a lot more fun and have allways fascinated me but seemed to complicated to play.)

when your just questing and the mobs health are considerably low compared to dungeons you'll have a relatively short fight...i doubt that rake may even have time to properly do damage. You can throw it in just so your doing the right rotation but generally for a standard mob it'd be
charge > ravage > mangle to 5cp > ferocious bite.
honestly when i'm out questing mobs don't live long enough to get the ferocious bite off. You can throw in tigers fury if you have the talent to generate more energy and make the fight that much faster.

I`ll try that rotation for standard questing-mob; no need to use all abilities I guess. The faster the better. :)
I have the talent for Tigers fury, that comes in handy sometimes. What would you considder an ok "rotation" for a high-health mob or a dungeonboss?

charge > ravage > mangle to 5cp > ferocious bite.
A bit of nitpickery, but I wouldn't start off with ravage. Unless you mean the non-proc version.
The reason you don't wanna hit Ravage as soon as Stampede procs, is that it's free and your energy recharges meanwhile. But if you use it while your energy is still maxed, you basically waste that energy that could have been recharged ...
Charge - Rake - Mangle - Tigers Fury - Mangle x 2-3 - Ferocious bite
Rake after mangle so it gets more benefit from the debuff. Unless the damage is recalculated each tick, I'm not sure on that one ...
What would you consider an ok "rotation" for a high-health mob or a dungeon boss?
You basically described it above, except mangle (excluding the first one) needs to be replaced by shred. Which you already know :)
At your level, you should just check the following for your "rotation":
- keep bleeds up (rake and 5cp rip)
- keep mangle debuff up
- Shred
- if you are gaining cp so fast that you keep clipping rip when you refresh it, try and weave in some low cp fero bites.

Damage for bleed ticks are calced on each tick so mangle after rake but before its first tick would not lose you any damage from the ticks, that said if I recall correctly the initial hit on rake is boosted by mangle as well. So the question is do you care about the order enough to get that boost on the initial hit or do you want to use rake first to potentially get an extra tick in before the mob dies?
