Special ammo for ranged weapons?

I've not looked through the forums for this topic, so sorry if anyone else thought of it first.
I had the idea that a crafter (un-sure of which one) should be able to create special arrows that had different traits. You wouldn't need arrows to use the bow/gun/crossbow, they would just boost damage/apply a debuff.
Such ammo could be:
Flaming Ammo
Chilled Ammo
Poison Ammo
and the like.

They had ammo back in the day and too many people whined that it cost too much and they had to carry too much and all the other crybaby stuff for leveling and so on. It went along the lines of being the only class that absolutely relied on an expendable item to function. Of course this wasn't in any way rationalized by having a controllable cruise missile of doom for multiple targets, your own personal tank for group quests and the ability to nearly always avoid any substantial repair bill in raid wipes.
Anyways, I like my hunter, never had any issue with ammo or it's costs and seriously disliked anyone, even my guild leader complaining about it back in the day. So, I will shut up now but know this, it was done, people complained so a large hunk of flexibility that could have been done was lost.

I think this would be a nice idea. Even if it worked like Rogue Poisons, I'd be fine.

I actually think that this shouldn't be an ammo per se, but instead, as Interest stated, like a rogue poison. You could apply it to your bow, like a temporary enchantment, similar to a shaman weapon buff. The idea that each type would do a different effect is also interesting, and then of course we'd have another mechanic that we have to deal with at the table, making hunters all the more complicated. Even so, it's a good idea, and i'd like to actually see that implemented. Saving Conc shot in arena's would be so nice and OP. Moving auto shots tipped with frost... sexy.

Give engineers some income back!
(i was just starting to build my fortune, I was one of the like 3 people on my server that had Bullet spec, and we "agreed" on 10g a stack, and with the prices on Primal Earth, i was making a nice little killing, lol.)

You're missing the point. The OP (and others) are saying that it could be a relic of some sort that produced effects, or perhaps "arrows" or "bullets" that weren't consumed on shot that gave special buffs.

Too powerful.
In fact, I wouldn't allow shots to apply a snaring effect.
I'd go with plain and simple ones:
Volatile Tip:
Ranged attacks have a chance to cause (?*RAP) Fire damage to all nearby targets for 1 hour.
Acid Tip:
Ranged attacks splash the target with corrosive acid, dealing X Nature damage every 2 seconds for 10 seconds. Stacks up to 5 times. Lasts for 1 hour.
Chilled Tip:
Ranged attacks have a chance to cause (?*RAP) Frost damage for 1 hour.
Venom Tip:
Ranged attacks have a chance to cause (?*RAP) Nature damage and reduce the effectiveness of healing done to the target (THIS REPLACES WIDOW VENOM). Lasts 1 hour.
When any of these tips are used with Multi Shot, it will have a chance to proc on only the primary target. If you're Survival and specialized into Serpent Spread, the effect can proc on all targets.

that is perfect, not op but at the same time giving us a buff we need (i mean cmon we cant take anything down solo with ease, and yet to most classes were a ten second delay)

I still think Hunters will need a slight nerf for this to work. MM has a nerf coming for it anyways.

Almost like reading from the PH Ranger Spellbook.

I'd like it as a relic rather than a buff because I really dislike the idea of putting up a buff all the time. As of such I've really wondered why they haven't made Mark of the Wild, Power Word: Fortitude, etc auras that are constantly up rather than buffs (paladins would just select one aura like we select aspects). This does of course mean that we could just get it as an aura as well rather than a relic, I just felt that it would be more "realistic" (to abuse that term for a fantasy game) to have relics that could act like quivers that produce arrows with the desired buff. Don't even have to be any stats on the relic.
cant be a relic. relic slot would mean no hunter wep, unless it is like the old ammo slot

I actually came up with it on the spot using the fact Hunters use Frost traps, Fire traps, and Nature-based abilities.

Just throwing my 2 cents i think that Blizz did well in removing old ammo system.
I'm fine with them removing ammunition as well.

With all the ideas correlated into this section, the ones that pop out to me that are the best are Interest's magic-tipped arrows idea, where the effects are basic and wonderful, and the relic idea.
The change to the relic idea that was later stated was to make it "like" a quiver, or put it in the ammo slot.
Solution: Replace the ammo slot back in the game, and instead make it a quiver slot. This replaces the need for an extra bag for arrows, and at the same time, gives the hunter class an extra ability they can use.
What I was thinking is they could go to a bowmaster or just the local hunter trainer, and say something along the lines of, "Hey, I want my quiver to shoot fire tipped arrows now" and your quiver would then gain the enchantment "Fire Based" or something of the sort. The quiver itself would be useless, but the enchantment you place onto it would be the driving force.

Quiver could be cosmetic though.
Example1: For a bow, you could have a green quiver with arrows that you draw from it, which give a poison debuff. Or it could be red, and give extra fire damage.
Example2: For a gun, it could be an ammo pouch/powder... whatchamacallit/sack (forgot the word). Or, for another buff, it could be an ammo belt worn across the chest, etc.
