I believe I understand your position perfectly. You think that sexuality itself is a beautiful and probably sacred thing, and that modern culture takes that and abuses it and rolls it around in the mud and calls it sexual progress and women's liberation, to the point where our children are growing up and think that this is normal and acceptable and good behavior. Is that about the sum of it?GET OUT OF MY HEAD

I believe that culture and social norm is the commanding principle in this area.Yep. That's where we disagree.

Well you're head is reasonably cleaner than most, so I'm not in a hurry to get out :)
It should be noted, what I think is wrong about thinks like <insert random pop star on stage> is not the sexuality, but the fact that parents are not involved. "Oh kids will be kids" is the stock response, and so many parents don't know anything about the culture their kids are a part of. I think that's part of the reason most teens feel like their parents are so old-fashioned. Because they are. There's not effort on the parent's part to educate their kids and try to understand the things their kids like in order to better help their kids be responsible about it.
A complete side question, you don't need to make a whole discussion about it or even answer it if you don't want to, I'm just interested:
I've look through some of your posts, and I understand you're christian and you take some very hard-line christian stances. What do you think of homosexuality? Not the legality or non-legality, but the morality of it. I don't want to put it so bluntly, but if I died right now would I go to hell in your opinion? Is there something wrong with me? I'm not asking so I can condemn you or anything, I'm just asking because of your very conservative view about things like sexuality.

What do you think of homosexuality? Not the legality or non-legality, but the morality of it.I believe it is immoral. I try as hard as I can to look at morals objectively, using true Christianity as my measure. God says that homosexuality is an abomination, and a homosexual relationship runs contrary to God's design for marriage, which is itself a template for Christ's relationship with the church. You don't install a garbage disposal upside down. It doesn't make sense, and it runs contrary to the directions.
I don't want to put it so bluntly, but if I died right now would I go to hell in your opinion? Is there something wrong with me? I'm not asking so I can condemn you or anything, I'm just asking because of your very conservative view about things like sexuality.I don't know if you are going to hell or not. I'm not the authority on that, God is. What I genuinely dislike is people who claim to be Christian who feel that they are the authority on who is going where. I've never told anybody that they are going to hell, and I've never guaranteed someone that they are going to heaven. I don't issue the hall passes here.
To better assist you with understanding whether I
think
you will go to hell, I would tell you that your post death destination depends on a lot more than your sexuality. Were you a kind person? Were you a honest person? Were you loving to children, and the poor, and the sick? Did you love God?
Everyone makes mistakes. Not everyone is going to hell.

My point of difference is that the reason there's a difference is that culture changes. And since I believe that culture and social norm is the commanding principle in this area, then there is no reason to condemn it.
Once upon a time ago, slavery was considered acceptable. If cultural and social norm is the commanding principle, why was there a reason to condemn it?

I thought I might have left something out but when I look at it it's right there: "in this area". What is proper and improper dress. Slavery has nothing to do with what I said, as neither does murder or eating ice cream. I was talking about what determined the propriety of clothing styles.
Thanks for the answer. Sucks to be me I guess!

Sucks to be me I guess!
Why?

I'm not trying to be mean or anything. I'm just commenting on the immorality of just being what I am. I can't (or am unwilling) change what I am, so I guess it sucks to be me! But that's all for another discussion, I didn't mean to derail this thread, I just wanted to grab MyTies's opinion on a specific aspect of sexuality.

Movements around the world gradually helped if not outright forced society to change its opinion on slavery, from it being a socially acceptable practice to a condemned one.
I voted no. I believe in the right to express yourself. I do also believe that with that right those who are expressing themselves need to be prepared for unintended consequences of there expression.

If you believe in the Bible, then it is something you can change. If you don't believe in the Bible, then you don't really believe it sucks to be you.

Oh I don't believe in the Bible at all (as a "scripture" that is), and I know I don't believe it sucks to be me. I was just commenting on it as I see it. Makes it sound akin to a psychopath born with an abnormal desire to kill people, only I have an abnormal desire to love the wrong people. It would definitely suck to be him. Oh well, I'm not hatin'! I'm just mildly resigned.

I wouldn't treat a homosexual any different than I would anyone else who was imperfect. I'd love to sit down to lunch with you and have a great debate. I think you'd find my words are a lot harsher than my tone.

That's the problem with written words. I really don't think homosexuality is as bad as the Bible makes it out to be, compared with everything else.

What makes one area different from another? I would like to note that 'this area' that you're talking about isn't purely about proper and improper dress, it's about the nature of sexuality.

The nature of sexuality, as manifest in dress. There are lots of aspects of sexuality I haven't even touched on: marriage, sex ed, birth control, homosexuality (I've actually touched on that now), and so forth. Don't draw any false conclusions from what I'm saying, I've only ever been talking about clothing, and sexuality as it pertains to the showcasing of ones body in some state of dress.
But what makes one area different from another? I think there are certain inalienable and intrinsic human principles that guide our existence. I think a lot of religions got this right with their "do to others as you would have them do to you." I think that's the heart of it, and it branches out to cover things like murder and slavery. What people wear and what limits are in place for the expression of sexuality therein however I believe is a matter of custom and social norm. And we follow custom and social norms because that itself leads back to "do to others as you would have them do to you" by promoting a peaceful coexistence.

Do you condemn Saudi Arabia for requiring that women wear the burqa and the hijab?

As I already said on page 3, as long as there is universal suffrage (in other words, the women do have a say in it) then I can find nothing to condemn about it. That's their culture and their way of life, and I won't condemn it simply on the fact that it's not my culture.
