[Feral] 4.2 Gear Guide For Kitties And Bears!

Hi everyone,
The
porpoise
purpose of this guide is to set out recommended gear for bear and kitties available in 4.2 content.
Heroic gear is not included; if you are clearing hard modes you probably already know where to go for your info!
I hope this guide serves the players lumped between 'casuals' and the 'hard-core' - those of us on the bell-curve of gamers.
Here are the tables with
recommended
reforging:

4.2 didn't bring much change for bears. EJ still favours Agility (mitigation) over Stamina (sponging), and our preferred secondary stats are still Crit and Mastery - these both buff our Savage Defense.
Reforging: Reforge haste/hit/expertise to crit, mastery or dodge when possible.

Now, cats had a few changes to our secondary stats – which we are still trying to figure out!
Secondary stats kinda look like this: Mastery / Haste > Crit / Hit > Exp. (<--- this is what I understood from EJ)
Mastery buffs bleeds, so don't neglect that. Haste affects energy regen so more energy available for attacks. Our direct damage abilites (think Shred) got buffed, so it's important that we don't miss. Thats where Hit/Exp comes in.
The general consensus is that haste is better for us than it was, and most other secondary stats are too close to call – the suggestion is to find balance with whatever you want or think is best. The proof will be in the parses and theorycrafting in the coming months.

Some items are arguable, some choices are clear-cut. This is the dilemma we face in 4.2. A few of the 'honorable mentions' are indeed capable of preference, whilst others are pretty much the only option – yet poorly itemised with secondary stats.

Is this a kitty AND a bear guide? WH is in serious need of an up to date kitty guide but has probably the best bear guide currently available on the interwebs here already. If you feel that is is lacking in some way I'm sure Thror would quite happily step in and make any clarifications or add additional info as needed tot he existing Bear guide.
Edit: If this ends up in the middle of your posts, I will happily delete it to make things tidy for you.

No you can post, I was finished.
Thror has an awesome 'how to tank' guide, mine just answers what gear to specifically utilise.

I guess I missed the "Gear" part of the title. Chalk it up to no sleep :P

Crit and Mastery are the best "green" stats for mitigation that appear on our gear, but they are not the best green stat overall. That is why we reforge to Dodge and not Mastery/Crit. You should only ever reforge to Crit if you decide to go strictly the Mastery/
Expertise
way, and even then, reforging any over-exp-cap equips into Dodge would probably be better for raids.
What I am saying is that your reforge hints in the Bear section are all wrong. Otherwise, a handy list.

Ok I have no idea why EJ says that bears reforge to either dodge
or
crit
or
mastery. I know some bears are trying out a mastery-stacking build atm, but I was under the impression that dodge > all.
Then again, maybe it's because dodge is starting to have DR ...

This is what I was going for initially :)
Also, you don't mention any reforges on your second ring. "stats + gem slot"?
And lastly (I think), you seem to have missed the wrist slot. I'm currently wearing
Flickering Wristbands
, which is Throne of the Four Winds style loot from Alysrazor, and it was agi + crit/mastery when it dropped ^_^ There's also
Flamebinder Bracers
from VP.

Thror,
I understand where I went wrong.
I was focusing on Crit/Mast gear because even if/when we reforge them to dodge, they are still better to have for bears than haste for example.
Have edited the bear reforging suggestions.

Ideally you get Gear with Mastery and Crit and Reforge the Crit to Dodge :P You stack dodge AND mastery that way.

The Legs still read Hit to crit instead of Hit to dodge.

Oh my, I did NOT know that!
/sarcasm
The Legs still read Hit to crit instead of Hit to dodge.
And a lot of pieces don't read any reforge at all ...

DR isn't the really the reason yet, as we aren't really quite into heavy DR.
More significantly, the reason that Mastery is gaining in weight at current gear levels is due to the way Mastery scales. We are gaining AP very quickly, which causes Mastery's weight to increase. This is the primary reason that we no longer get 2AP per 1Str any longer, and why Blizz had stated the reason for the nerf as bears were scaling too well vs. other tank classes.
While the change in stat weights that resulted from the Strength change did lower the benefit of Mastery & its weight, it appears that it is approaching dodge as we gear beyond ~365 ilvl.
Thankfully, when Blizz made the decision to fix primary stats on gear by ilvl, they made it a bit easier to make this kind of generalization, at least for bears.
edit:fixed weird line break

I've added the forgotten Wrist slots, and fixed the Bear reforging as suggested by Thror. Any pieces left out can be reforged at the players discretion. Cats can reforge whatever they think best.
Still no general consensus as to which 'green' stats to reforge to for either spec.
