Okay, I know there are some "which spec is best?" threads but I'm wanting a little bit more than "BM" or "MM" or whatever, I need a bit more info here.
I think I'm going to keep my main spec BM, I decided that much. Once I get my hunter to 85 being able to pull out a corehound if we need a bloodlust and so forth is nice and BM seems good all around.
It's my offspec I'm confused on. I know in wrath it was pretty much MM was the dps king and survival was pvp. I was told though that survival is pretty nice for pve now due to cata's focus on survival (the concept, not the spec).
What are the ups and downs of MM vs Surv in a PvE build? What pets are considered best to tag along with these? What would you recommend for heroics? For raids? I can look around for rotations and spec builds myself I'm sure but I seem to find either a lack of information comparing the two or too many conflicting opinions that turn into flames rather than legitimate help. It sounds like it's not as easy as "what is the best spec for pve?" anymore, but it would be nice to know where and how these shine brightest?
(sorry, I babble but I like to be thorough so my questions aren't misunderstood)

MM is better for single target dps. SV is a little bit better for AOE damage. Both are pretty even in terms of utility. MM has an interrupt, AP buff, and can talent into Concussive Barrage for some extra add control. SV has a haste buff, slightly better traps, an extra form of CC in Wyvern Sting, and can talent for additional stamina or pick up Entrapment for add control.
If your main spec is BM and you intend to use it most of the time, then i would probably recommend going SV for a couple of reasons.
1) SV would be your AOE spec. BM AOE is pretty terrible, so an SV offspec would give you a better option.
2) I find that the SV 10% haste buff is needed much more often than MM's 10% AP buff which can be provided by Blood DKs, Enh Shamans, or any Paladin. Given the prevalence of Paladins, there's a very good chance you will have one around. The haste buff is provided by Frost DKs and Shamans but has to compete with Wrath of Air totem so you may not get it unless you have two shamans in your party or raid.

I didn't even think of it that way. Sounds like it would work well with my BM spec. Going to leave this open for more suggestions but sounds like SV might be the way to go for me.

There really aren't that many encounters where AoE damage is make or break if you picked SV vs MM. MM scales better with gear and I do enjoy spamming Multishot more as MM due to both the focus reduction and rapid recup. For example the worms during Magmaw I actually have an easier time as MM because by the time I spam MS to out of focus, I'm generally withing KS range of the worm I have targetted One KS later and I'm back at 50 focus, enough to spam even more MS. 1-2 more MS's later chances are the next worm is dead and I can continue to MS them all dead. By the time they are all down I'm at full focus ready to re-attack Magmaw.
Try both SV and MM and see which you like better. Some people keep one PvE spec and the other spec they use for PvP purposes. If all you ever do is raid, then you can have 2 PvE specs as well.

My thought process was basically that BM will be his single-target spec the vast majority of the time since it's his "main" spec. Since MM is really a single target spec, its a better candidate to replace BM as a primary spec than to compliment it as a secondary. I think SV would just have more usefulness in those situations where, for whatever reason, your main spec isn't really suitable.
When you think of situations that require you to use your off-spec, things like AoEing adds, add control, kiting, providing a buff, etc come to mind. IMO SV just fits that bill a little better than MM.

SHE is indeed using BM as HER main spec. XP lol, but yeah, I might give both a try, lord knows that it's going to be a bit before this toon is 85 anyway. I'm just trying to plan ahead and get used to whatever spec instead of just jumping into the spec at 85 and trying to learn it then.
I'm keeping both specs PvE, though if I choose SV for my offspec I might fool around in BGs or something with her, not sure. Sometimes BG leveling is nice.
Either way, I can see both your points. I guess the best way is just to try both and see what sticks for me.
