JRRT didn't use disney, he didn't "turn something silly into something badazz" he used mythology to write fantasy, and did it very well.
I never said silly into bad ass. I said, and I quote, "Tolkien turned something mischievious and mundane and made it serious, deadly, and fearsome." :P

Except legends and myths already painted the Dwarves, Elves, and other Fae as very deadly, very fearsome, and very very serious for any who met them on the Moors, the Roads or anywhere else.

True, but considering I am by no means 'learned' in the germanic myths, I very much enjoy how Tolkien did such things as turning elves from this small spirite or fae like creatures into tall, noble, and fair beings of ancient times. Even if they generally seem like total tools. :P

Again....legends had already painted them as such, long before Tolkien started writing Middle Earth.

Yea but Tolkien cleaned them up if you will. Before then these creatures were more like fairys or spirits than the beings that Tolkien gave us. Also while they may have been dangerous, many times it was more mishcevious than the brutal caliber of the orcs from tolkiens universe.

So stealing children away and leaving little monsters in the cradles, which sickened and died fairly quickly, trapping humans in Rings for thousands of years or taking them Underhill where hundreds of years passed outside, challenging travelers on the road and if they won they got great reward but if they lost they would die.....are just mischievous? Very very few legends about the Fae are 'happy' ones; most of them are far more brutal then anything you see in the Tolkien universe.
Yes, Tolkien set up 'modern' fantasy, but he only took the bare bones of a lot of stuff; as said earlier, there is no Light or Dark Court for the Elves in Middle Earth; and as the Dark Courts are nearly always spoken of things that would drive a human insane just from seeing one......But you do see it a lot now a days: Any author who feels the need to put in the Fae to their stories almost always show the Courts; the good Light and the 'evil'(well sometimes) Dark(not that dark is always evil).
But seriously, even Fairy Tales, the original ones, are far more grim and bloodier then any of the sanitized things we are used to seeing: Cinderella, great charming tale about true love and all that? Till you think about the fact that girl spent a decade or more as a slave, and most of the original tales have one or both of the step sisters hacking at their feet to try to make them fit in the glass slippers....and don't get me started on an original Snow White or Sleeping Beauty.

Most brothers grimm fairy tales have pretty !@#$ed up originas this is commen knoledge. But what people are trying to say about Tolkien is that he took all these fantasy creatures and gave them a very real and viceral image, and this is the image of them that we use today.
