Its happened to me before, but it was during the weekday in the morning and a simple call did the trick, waited maybe 15-20mins tops to get through and then not long after to get everything restored. Sorry I cannot help much more since it is a pretty odd situation that seems to happen randomly to people.

Maybe someone using an authenticator might provide more accurate infromation but I would try: "I've lost my authenticator and I want to remove it from my account." with reason: "Can't log when using authenticator". And then remove it and login with password only, maybe try to add it again later. A friend of mine had the problem of his authenticator not working (EU) when he went to study in USA. He was using mobile authenticator for his phone. He simply removed it and plays without it while in USA. Hope this helps.

I had this happen after I returned from a business trip. I resynced and retried several times without success. I called and during the second call, the rep removed the authenticator. I could then log in and then the authenticator back on. I do not remember the actual message, but afterward it made perfect sense.

I am also in Afghanistan and the same problem happened to me with my authenticator. My account was flagged at first but I was still able to play then Blizzard locked it. Getting back on did require my authenticator to be removed from my account and it did take a while to finally contact Blizzard. I know what you mean about the phone calls, there is no way you can spend that much time waiting over here. If its at all possible see if you can get a new service from a satlink with a switch network going into your living quarters so you can be wired in. That method has served us best over here.

To PubCrawler07 and Dazzitron, are you using the Itunes Mobile Authenticator App? If so, there is a known issue with it. Check here:
