I'm all for this idea, I vote Interest or someone else with way too much spare time writes a guide:
Melee Hunter: Beast Mastery Revamp
If there is enough Interest(no pun intended), I could probably write it myself though
Seriously, I'd really consider rolling a melee hunter if it was actually implemented. Fighting side-by-side with your spirit beast, it'd feel epic.
I like it.
Edit: Crazy idea. What if you, as Beast Mastery, had the ability to merge with your pet, granting you a set of abilities (sort of how Metamorphosis and Tree of Life works for Warlocks and Druids respectively) in addition to a passive buff, aswell as your normal abilities? Take the example used above, the Dragonhawk. When merged with a Dragonhawk you gain x% of your melee damage as fire damage, some sort of "Cone of Fire"-ability, maybe an "Engage" ability, aswell as one or two others.
I might just have played too much other games and this probably wouldn't fit into current lore, but I think it'd be pretty cool. Any thoughts?

You really need to see the stuff I do on War-tools.

i still think having BM hunters as a melee heavy side of the hunter would be a good idea, make through talents only strikes, and a bonus strike when you select BM tree as your main

So I've actually been thinking this over.
While it's possible to do this, it would require way too much reworking and spell design on Blizzard's behalf.
What can be done:
Add a new passive upon choosing Beast Mastery....
Rexxar's Legacy
Allows the use of all shot abilities as melee attacks. You forfeit the use of your shot attacks as ranged attacks and lose the use of some abilities as a result (Auto Shot, for instance). Increases your melee damage by X% and all shot abilities that are converted to melee attacks now scale off melee weapon damage. While dual wielding, your chance to hit is increased by 3% and all melee abilities cause you to hit with both weapons.

No. We do not need more reliance on our pet...even if it is BM spec.

Well, perhaps not a melee class, BUT maybe have a good amount of melee advantages, like make certain melee attacks give buffs for ranged attacks, so you'll still be ranged, but actually try to get a little melee in the fight. (plus disengage would be even more useful that way)

Nah.
To be quite honest: I'd rather we just have a significantly large amount of interactive damage through our pets for BM. It's called Beast Mastery, after all.
I mean....we have Kill Command and more or less macro everything else.
But we don't actually have anything beyond that (Intimidation is situational).
Edit: This is generally my final opinion on the manner. If you guys want, you can request me to make BM Melee Hunter and I will do it at some point...
After I finish Temple of Winds and my changelog (the changelog is almost done, btw).

My biggest reservation would be that hunter PvP, which is centered around kiting, would be a complete toss-up. Disengage would become very tricky, with beastmasters having to face away from their enemy in order to close the gap between them .
I can see BGs now
Noob 1: Haha look at the hunter running away
Noob 2: lol Yeah saw him hitting with a dagger in the last bg
Notanoob: you realize he's BM and you're about to die right?
Noob 1: yeah right whatever BM lmaohcrap
hunter disengages
WTFBBQPWND
noob 1 dies
noob 2 dies

This is what I always thought.
Beast Masters get the same pet attack that any spec has. They get Intimidate as a talent specialization, which is a $%^&ing joke honestly.
The specialization should be a stronger pet attack. Or at least some sort of dps pet ability.

actually instead of makin it pet attacks, make it an option like we learn bear abilitys and cat and all of them, but as melee, that way we rly will be melee, and there can never be such a thing as a huntard for one who hits with melee
and interest i think i speak for all when i get on my knees and grovel.......please please please do something oh masiah

Like a couple people have mentioned, great idea, I really get it, but will take some re-working...
You can't exactly have a character do all melee AND range in the same spec. I guess casters can do both but might be a little different with hunters.
I like the Rexxar modification idea. That, coupled with mastery would give the dev's quite a bit of working room I would think.
Also the Aura to increase melee dmg and nerf range dmg would work well to add balance to the class and prevent OP
