Disc is god to bring as a 3rd healer, im actually the tank healer in 10mans as disc.
But the first bosses dont have that high of a enrage timer. Magmaw and Tron system has no enrage timer at all on normal. Halfus with a disc priest u can make it. Hard part on halfus is the first few seconds min of the fight. Once drakes die the disc priest can smite to do damage and healing the tank. I reach easly 20k dps on halfus when the smiting phase starts. Sure helps to get him down faster, dont make the priest only do smite.
Magmaw head phase Smite to top of the tanks/melee before he get back in a upright position. Cast Shadow fiend for mana and extra dps, but magmaw has no enrage timer other than healers mana bars.
Omnitron, no enrage timer as well but it helps to smite the tron that got dragged into the gas clouds and when ur in a blue puddle for mana regen. Both effect increases damage there for doing more heals and extra damage to get the fight faster.
Overall its good to have a disc around but dont expect magic dps numbers to make up for slacking dps.

Ultimately a Disc's job is to heal. The combined total of his healing + absorb should be the same as any other healer's output.
During boss phases where healing is intensive, a Disc priest would tend to use his powerful heals like GHeal, Penance and PoH. Smiting basically replaces the weak / efficient heal that all healers now have.
Specific bosses aside, a disc priest pumps out roughly the same amount of damage as a single target tank.
A tank's job is to hold threat! The fact that he deals some damage and makes a contribution to the boss kill is simply a bonus. Same applies to disc priest.
At the end of the day if you want the boss to die faster you recruite a real DPSer. Sounds to me like you want an additional healer. In that case Disc priest is certainly a nice addition to your healing core.
^ This
+1 internets to you.
Best case scenario: pick up a disc priest with a shadow offspec ;P

It's no biggie to make a macro what casts smite or heal depending on your target.
