if it's green some enchanter might want it so he can disenchant it but not many people will want to buy it to use unless it's rare or does something cool.
Gray and white stuff just sell em to vendors noone will really buy them unless it's a common regeant.
Blues should be equipped straight away before you realise it has agility and you're a warrior :)
Or put on the AH
Purple sell for muchos $$ if they are not BoP or useable by you.

Don't auto-sell common (white) items to vendors, for example, on my server
Chunk of Boar Meat
will sell for close to 1g a piece, which is a hell of a step up from the 3c you're getting from the vendor.
There are some commons that can be auto-sold if people aren't interested in buying them, again for example,
Shiny Fish Scales
and
Fish Oil
don't sell at all on my server, even though they are a reagent for two Shaman spells.
Get to know you're economy and you'll find that the random items you're picking up start to make you more than you'd expect.

I prefer to sell everything to vendors even if I could get more from the AH for the simple reason that it's "less annoying" and less work..
Money is so easy to make in any case, and due to the way it scales, I wouldn't AH anything especially at low levels. This is of course assuming that you already have enough for mounts and whatnot (maybe through a higher level char).(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Koper##DELIM##

Two things about using the AH for green BOEs. First, you have to research it to find a price, finding a similar item which takes time.. and secondly, you have to pay AH fees, including a pretty big listing fee which you lose if the item doesn´t sell. Most green BOEs have such a high fee that it is very risky to list them unless you price it so low that you know it will sell.
Also, people know they are getting gear when they quest.. there just are not a lot of people out there who are shopping for green items unless they are severely unpriced, in which case they will be bought for enchanting.

Personally I do fairly well with the AH. Any green or blue BOE items that I cannot use are sold at the AH. I have to disagree with the notion that green items do not sell. I would have to say that 99% of the armor and weapons I put up for auction sell, and without pricing them extremely low. I do have a little less success with items such as minerals, metal, stone and gems, but still do well. Anything soulbound or that is grey ( and that are not metal/stone/gems/minerals) usually get sold to a vendor.
As for pricing, I simply use info on Wowhead, and price things around what the average buyout price is. I wish more people did this. Too many less knowledgeable (or greedy) folks selling items for 300g when the average buyout price is closer to 5g. Worse yet are the ones who price something at 300g when 10-20 or more people are selling the same thing for 4g at the same time. Now who would you buy the item from?
Just my 2 cents worth.

To be fair to the over priced guys, it's a lot more common these days when people want to post a price per stack (e.g. 15g for stack of 20), and accidentally post as price per item (e.g. 15g each = 300g for a stack of 20).

True enough. I can see that happening. There have been a few times when I have messed up a post in the AH.
