What if Maiev brings him back?
The Old Gods do exist outside of Azeroth, there was an Qui'raji guy in Arcatraz that suggested it, and the spectral Arrakoa in Shadowmoon Valley where trying to summon something that looked alot like an Old God to me.
Maiev goes wandering in Outland following the fall of Illidan, having no purpose to her life. And someone comes along and offers her a chance at regaining her purpose. She agrees. The next day Malfurion finds his brother, confused and remembering nothing of the last 10,000 years. Maiev, meanwhile, has been shown what she's done (though her "benefactor" left out the amnesia part) and stormed off to kill Illidan again. Arriving in Darnassus the Night Elves turn her away, not letting her kill the apparently memoryless Illidan. At which point her Benefactor points out that he's probably just faking it and with his help she can get to him, through anyone who protects him....

For Adamsm eyes only
Kil'Jaeden started planning again, this time intending on transforming the entire Legion into power batteries for the Blood Elf race, then wipe out the Scourge and everyone else who was a threat to the Blood Elf nation.
Can you give me more details on this?
Links, books, poetry, anything.
You've made me curious.
Thank you.

They could always pull a "Naruto" and bring every deceased character in history back to life all at once.
4.2 5 Man Heroic Dungeon? Illidan, Kael'thas, SSC Lady, Hyjal Archiblahblah, Gruul, Mag, LK, Lootship, Champions, Hogger, Saurfang, others?

I chuckled.

They did respond positively to Illidan being mentioned at Blizzcon, and something was brought up about redemption, which strikes me as quite a bit similar to Medivh. If that's the route they end up going, I could see Illidan coming back to warn us, and possibly aid us, becoming a sort of neutral faction like the Argent Crusade and the Earthen Ring. Obviously, some threat from the Burning Legion would make the most sense, although it would be interesting to use him to introduce an entirely different kind of threat to Azeroth.
I hold that the most interesting way to revamp outlands would be to have the Orcs (for the horde) and Draenei (for the Alliance) come screaming for help when the ruins of Draenor turns into the battlefield for the Kil'Jaeden vs. Seargeras civil war that's been rumored to be brewing for the last little while.

Illidan is something of a tragic character. He's also a selfish character, ever-greedy for more power. But that lust for power always struck me as seeking new and better ways to eliminate his enemies. He did it in the War of the Ancients, he did it during the Third War. Magic: the Gathering has had heroes like this, and they can be very, very interesting because they buck a lot of the normal conventions regarding heroes. My only reservations are due to the current dev team's creative direction; I could see Illidan being derailed to the point it's hard to recognize him.
I was hoping someone else would cite Blizzcon.

That was his whole purpose heh; it was always about his people.

There was no telling what happened after we defeated Illidan, not like some bosses, we chopped off their head and complete the quest. But not for Illidan. I always think he simply did not just die, or I hope..
We chopped of Nefarians head.
And now he's in BWD . . .
As an Undead Dragon, same as Onyxia.

It would make an very interesting story if Illidan came back as an ally, along with his new fraction (similar to Argent Crusade, as mentioned by someone)
After Deathwing's defeat (why must we always win? lol) we will most likely deal with Azshara or the Burning Legion, or both at the same time. Azshara tried summoning Sargares b4 but failed, it could be possible for another attempt.

Because Illidan coming back as an ally makes a whole lot of sense.

The biggest problem with Illidan ever becoming an ally again? He would have to say 'I'm sorry/I was wrong' to pretty much the entire world.....and considering his character.........

Well, we certainly wouldn't be prepared for it.

An Undead Night elf Demon Hunter! In all seriousness, if Blizzard wanted to bring Illidan back they could do it even after chopping his head off, that said I don't see his return happening anytime soon (not counting his probable appearance in the Caverns of Time: War of the Ancients raid).

I don't recall taking Illidan's head.

Hm, I don't know why I was so convinced that
The Fall of the Betrayer
asked you to take Illidan's Head.

Doesn't mention Illidan's head being removed. And it wasn't during the encounter. His head isn't lootable.
If Illidan does come back, it would probably be as a spirit-being. Or some kind of form which reflects redemption.
