When your felguard gets his axe toss make a macro that tosses as the pet goes in. This will generate alot of agro.
I don't care for pet abilities being macroed to anything. I find it best to have axe toss bound all by itself so I can use it when the need arises. FG loses aggro? Stun mob. Mob try to flee? Stun mob. Pull an add on accident? Stun and fear.
I believe in keeping all pet abilities macroed alone (except things like legion strike or lash of pain), too many varying factors to have them macroed with something.

For the Fel Guard, I think from memory the Axe Toss one starts out on auto but you wana have both of them off auto so you can decide when yo use them. Personally I didn't use macro's for them for leveling, mostly because I was lazy. But yeah you want to have full control over them imo. I only ever used Axe Toss as a means to get the hell away when I pulled too many mobs, but Fel Storm was pretty much on CD the whole time.

for his abilities like felstorm and axe-toss, do I NEED to activate them in order for him to use them? or are they automatic like his other abilities?
Axe Toss or Felstorm do not have an automatic setting. They either have to be clicked from pet bar or macroed and put on your action bar and keybound. You don't have to be good with macros to do that, its the simplest macro there is./cast Felstormthats it.
Id also recommend macroing Pursuit and taking it off auto cast, he tends to use it when its not really necessary leaving it on cd when it is needed.
Also, it could be helpful to learn about macros, they can be amazingly handy if you know what they can do and how to write them.
This
is a really good guide to macros, teaches you what they do and how to write them. Its in the UI and Macro forum here on wowhead which is a great forum.
