. . . I've been trying to DPS as shadow in some random dungeons . . .
This is the problem.
Until your SPriest gets our ghetto-AoE, your going to hate it. Period, the class/spec has always been like that, regardless of what one or two people keep poping up and ZOMGing or their OMGYOUNUBBINGing that degrades useful tips.
Shadow is a single target dps spec, intentionally or not. Mana cost is too high, ramp up takes too long, and the spells themselves are not powerful enough. Once the ramp up is over though, same with affliction locks DoTs, their dps is a tad higher than most hybrids average raid output. Priests are not a primary dps class.
If you really, really want to dps as a priest prior to the 70s, run disc, glyph Penance, Smite, and get Glyph of Spirit tap. Have fun with something that overall hasn't changed since release.

Keep in mind, every class is balanced around end game, not leveling. As such some points in the leveling process are far easier in a specific spec. For example, all the advice I have seen about going 80-85 for a priest is "go shadow".

It's usually not worth it to put Shadow Word: Pain on trash mobs. They die too fast for it to tick.
Vampiric Touch on the other hand does a lot more damage and is usually worth using. For me a typical pull looks like this:
Ignore the primary target that everyone is attacking (it dies too fast for DoTs).
Put Vampiric Touch on everything else.

I found shadow to be incredibly easy to quest with, once i got Dispersion i believe i could dot up every mob in site (VT + SW:P), while tossing in a SW:D here and there for the mana back. I was doing this with zero BoA's as well, and i was finishing quests in single pulls.
Not sure if this is helpful, but hope it helped someone in some way.
