Here is my question is going engineering going to be worth it for me or am i being stupid and i should keep my combo of tailoring and jewlcrafting (dont ask why i went tailoring)?
I ask because over the last few weeks Ive been looking to see what i need and it seems that a lack of hit is prevalent on the gear i need. I did a little more research and found the engineering helms with the hit cogwheel gem and the on use glove enchant. I want to go engineering on the reasoning that i do not have to reforge as much other stats into hit and i can get a new helm every tier ( at least this is what i have been told by friends and guild mates.)
I do know that Enchanting and Jewlcrafting are considered to be a good combo for dps but i already have a maxed out enchanter and dont really want to level up another one.
I do know that its up to me in the end but i dont want to end up wasting a few thousand gold for something that wont be beneficial for me.

Aren't you forgetting about the JC exclusive epic cuts? Those would put JC approximately even with engineering cogwheels.
I did not forget about them im just used to using them for spellpower and nothing else.
i guess this is a long winded post asking if it is worth going engineering over tailoring for dps. I do know about the back enchant, free leg, enchant etc from tailoring.
I know this was going to be a stupid question to ask but i get all worked up on if i do or do not want to change something and the research Ive done dosent seem to help me in my decision. So i ask on here and hope to not be torn to pieces.
Note im not saying your response tore me to pieces Soccergenius.

Thank you Soccergenius for killing my self confidence for the day.
No but really thanks for helping me make an informed decision that i should have done some more research on.

But there's another piece to look at.
Helm of the Nether Scion
with
Sparkling Chimera's Eye
comes out to 873.94, beating the engineering helm by a large margin. Even better, that drops from the first boss in BoT.
You can't just compare a "normal" head piece with one that has a special JC only gem in it. Every item will win if you only pump it full of JC only gems, that doesn't make the item good in any way.
For a fair comparison you have to go with normal gems in
Helm of the Nether Scion
.
That being said there really is no reason whatsoever to exchange any crafting profession for another when thinking about dps.
They are all pretty much exactly equal. Tailoring is just fine, too.
All crafting professions give an average of 80 to your primary stat. Engineering with that special glove enchant, Blacksmithing with those two extra sockets, Tailoring with the cloak enchant and so on.
If you want Engineering for the fun gimmicks (teleporter to Northrend, shield on the belt for PvP, rocket boots, parachute and all that) then go for it. It is a fun profession to have.
If you want only the best raiding dps benefit then it really doesn't matter. Stick to what you already have, changing professions is completely useless since they all give the same bonus anyway.
By the way the Engineering helm is not "special", it is not part of the profession bonus. The helm itself has no secondary stats, all the cogwheel gems do is add those missing stats. That's why raid drops (with good secondary stats on them) should be pretty much exactly equal to the crafted one.

The OP asked about dropping his current professions for engineering.
So what? This has
nothing
to do with the unfair item comparison you posted.
The Engineering glove enchant is almost exactly as good as the 3 JC only gems. Both are completely irrelevant for the head piece.
Again:
All crafting professions are almost exactly equal in terms of stat gain. They all give 80 to the primary stat. There is no difference, there is no "better" profession for dps. It does not exist, period. All professions are balanced.
The only difference is in the perks the profession offers. Those have no influence on your dps but they are still nice to have (like cheap leg enchants for LW, the teleporters / parachute / Jeeves for Engineering, the shoulder enchant that saves the Therazane grind for scribes and so on).

True, BS and JC give the most freedom in the stat choice. But you want agil or int anyway.
Freedom was important in WotLK when Shaman healers wanted haste over spellpower and some dps classes wanted ArP or AP over agility. Now that agil / int / str are the by far most awesome stat for everyone there is no reason to ever take anything else as profession bonus (and the hit cap doesn't matter .. just reforge secondary stats into hit if you aren't at the cap, that's way more effective than replacing int / agil / str with hit).
Right now the additional freedom that BS and JC offer is completely useless.
About the tinker enchants: They still replace the "normal" enchants, right? So those nitro boots mean that you can't put the 50 mastery enchant on your boots. Highly situational, I'm not really convinced they make up for that lost damage.
Same for the parachute.
The bolt gun, seriously? Come on ... the interrupt is situationally useful but you can't realy count it as dps increase.
