I find tanking easy to be honest. I've never found it hard to smack things enough that they want to hit you back, while popping cd's every now and then. Healing is far harder imo, it's an art, and you really have to think fast. Dps is a science. You find the best spec, the best gear, and the best priority, and if you deviate from that even slightly, it has a large effect.
TL:DR : Dps is all about practice. Practice on dummies, practice on low level dungeons/raids. Practice in pugs/guild runs of current raids/dungeons that you and the group out gear. When on dummies you'll be practicing while standing still, and you'll miss out on things like Bloodlust, and execute phases. When in dungeons/raids, you'll practice doing it while not standing in the piles of poop.

Lets see your toon. So we can see gear/spec.
Its generally one or both of those that causes dps to be very low.

Lol tanks, for the most part, have the easiest jobs in raiding. They generally aren't affected by any of the mechanics healers/dps are, they usually have a set place to put the boss with little movement, and they don't have to worry about anyone else.
Explain why so many tanks are so very, very bad then.
I second this.

I have to wonder how much real tanking people have done that say things like:
Basically a lot of your dps depends on how you prepare, in a way that tanking doesn't.

Tank preparation is at least as in depth as DPS prep in that you work very hard to get the most mitigation out of your gear, learn the fight mechanics, set up, timers and so on ahead of time AND you have to be ready to deal with things when DPS screw up. In addition, I don't know any mechanics in the game that do a check on what role you have selected in the raid frame before applying them to you. Aoe is aoe, stun is stun, silence is silence and all have their effects on tanks. To the above comment, try being the off tank, it is usually more involved than main tank role in PvE raiding. Also try puging Cata heroics using LFD, then tell me tanking is cruise control easy mode.
One poster is right, tanking and healing are binary, you live or die, that's it. DPS is much more about competition however it is also a great place to hide because if you are in the middle of the numbers pack, then you have little stress and unless you do something glaringly obvious to muck up, you don't take blame for wipes.
To the OP, read stickies, post your armory, as said previously, if your DPS is super low, likely your gear is poor or your spec is just wrong. Decent gear and spec can put you in the middle of the pack if you even barely know your priorities (no set rotations anymore for DKs).

The guy did not link his Armory, but he has a profile created. Click his name, look at the toon's name and realm, go to Armory, put it in. If he pulls up, bingo, you got him. For instance, his profile linked is named Jaringno and profiler says it's on Shadowmoon US.
Putting that in at armory leads us to:
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/shadowmoon/jaringno/simple
That wasn't too terribly difficult.
This shows he last did something on this toon on 2010 Dec 31. Likely, he doesn't even play this toon, so I have a hard time picturing why he made this thread. He's also still level 80.
However, assuming his Armory was up to date and he was raiding, then look his Guild up on World of Logs. If they record raids, now you have a set of tools to analyze his performance.
That said, he should just link the Armory himself if he wants help, yet I haven't seen him return to this thread. That makes me feel as if any effort I put into helping will largely go to waste.
