I think the limit is the same as the max amount of gold you can have.

Gold cap.
Wrong, gold cap minus the 30 copper for postage.
Yeah, I nitpick.

You can send roughly the gold cap's worth of gold, but this is not advised, as Blizzard has a system in place to track these sorts of mailings and autoban you on the grounds of gold selling or something like that, even if you are not.
I'd recommend transactions that do not go over 10k gold. You can send as many of these transactions as you wish, as long as you have gold. It also helps to put a title on the mail like "Flying Training Gold" or something not only to help you, but to help the GMs and so on in the case you do happen to get autobanned for some strange reason.

Back in early wrath I was making really good gold. Sent 50k to my bank alt and nothing came of it, did it twice.

They can tell when you're mailing something to yourself. Sending large amounts to other people may raise flags.

Yeah I figured thats why nobody even bothered to whisp me. Hell I knew a friend who was notorious of buying gold off a website we knew about, risk free accept for the fact if Blizz caught on youre gone heh. He never bought more than 5-10k at a time and never once was whisped by a GM on what was going on. He probably bought 20-30k a month, dont think thats really enough in that time period to question someone.

If those bank alts are on your account, it doesn't raise flags.
But yeah, the max amount is the Gold Cap minus 30 copper.

I just mailed 20k to my alt the other day. As others have said, the limit is the Gold Cap (200k now I think?) minus 30 copper.
