Beyond the obvious answer of '!@#$ happens, and idiots exist?'? Don't worry about it. If you end up with him again, just let everyone know he's a Gold @#$%^ and expect him to roll need on any BoE.

Are BoEs fair game to everyone even if it is an upgrade for a certain group member? I asked a few guildies about it and got some different opinions. So what say you?
It doesn't matter if it's BoEs, BoPs or Bo-whatever; priority is given to class-specific upgrades.
Arguably, for casters things might get iffy ("do Elemental Shamans have the same right to Need a Cloth item?"), but for everything else, class upgrades first. If you're that desperate for money go pick up a profession or two.
Otherwise, Blizzard might as well make away with the Need-Greed-Disenchant mechanism, and automatically roll "Need" for everyone.

It was a neck piece, not an actual armour type; Rings, Trinkets, Relics/Guns/Bows, Weapons(if the class is able to use them) and Necks have need open to all classes to hit the button on.

I don't see the distinction.
If an item provides pure stat increase, then the class that relies on the stat should get priority (e.g., INT for spellcasters)

It's a BoE in a PuG setting; as in, those are not your friends/guild mates, so expecting them to be 'nice' is a silly idea.

BoEs are always fair game in pugs imo. Plenty of people like to do the upgrade first thing at the beginning of xpacs but it really isn't something to get all worked up about. While I tend to do the "nice" thing when it comes to BoE that is an upgrade for someone running the dungeon, I don't see it as their "right" the way I do about the BoP drops i.e. tank has first prio on tank gear etc.

BOE is fair game. Hunter can sell that BOE and buy a BOE that he can use. So in essence, when a BOE drops its an upgrade for anyone.
This, so much. It's not like the hunter is taking a major upgrade away from someone for some vendor trash. He can sell it and use that cash for an equivalent upgrade. It's just as good for him as the Ret paladin, just takes him slightly longer to get there.

That's only if people are nice. Technically, as a Prot Warrior, I can need on Plate with Intellect. Is it frowned-upon and bad manners? Yes. Is it against ANY rules? No. That's a blue post.
So, the hunter may have not been the best guy in terms of playing fair, but he didn't do anything wrong, so I don't see a reason to kick him.
People who break the rules are reported, people who are $%^&s/don't play fair are kicked.

Only if you want to be seen as a bad and never get into a raid.
But more importantly, Amry never said it was against any rules. S/he just said that it is more common sense as to what you should need.
Also: Generally, if I see something like that happen, I need as well and if I win it I give it to the person I think needs it more. For example there, I would have needed it, and then given it to the Paladin if I had won.

I personally roll greed on everything unless I actually need it for upgrade. Bliz should institute an auto roll system where no one can ninja stuff. If you have a better or equal item equipped or in bank/bags then you auto roll greed. If it's an upgrade then you auto roll need.

Then I guess I, and by extension my battle group (if the concept still exists, I thought we've all merged) are anomalies then.
The general rule 99% of the time for my pugs are, "Need only if you
really
need it". It's very rare for someone in my pugs to Need on a non-upgrade, BoE stuff, and even rarer if that person was not kicked for it.
Unique bags, trinkets (like the one that summons dogs from SM) or mounts, that's a different story. Everyone can use these, so I don't mind if they go with "Need". I myself will Need any mounts that dropped, and will say so beforehand. If someone went ahead and "Greed" it though, I will out of deference follow suit.
