gettin ready for my first caty raid this weekend, i gemmed/chanted all my gear, at the point where i just gotta reforge everything and i figured it would be prudent to ask how much hit and expertise should i hang on to?

As a tank you want to aim for 55 expertise (hard cap) so you can get the most threat. As far as hit rating wise you want 8% hit. This is the best as far as threat. If anyone says other , you are wronge.

This is true if you care about threat more than survivability, i.e., if you don't know how to play your class.

Very true the only Exp cap we need is soft cap (26) and we get 10 from the glyph. And also if you look at you talent tree summaries, you get 8% hit for ALL abilities. So ur hit capped the minute you select tank.
And just another Correction...

You don't even want that - its outdated EJ gibber... Reforge Mastery>Dodge/Parry>Everything - you gem Mastery>Mastery/Parry>Mastery/Stam - Enchant mastery>dodge/parry/armor>stam
and unless we start having threat issues before we hit the block cap - thats not going to change -
or well it might if you suddenly start farming every raid boss ingame, but then you allready know

So they we are not hit capped? or maybe a better phrase would be, "we don't have all the hit we need?" from said talent tree summary?
We do get all the hit we NEED from talents. We get 0 melee hit from talents. That's all we need.

Correct - you are not hit capped just by being Prot.
As a side note - taunts are not supposed to miss anymore (i.e. hit should not affect them at all). However, I could've sworn I've seen my taunt miss every once in a while.
We've been over that in several threads allready... SS or it didn't happen
and before anyone asks - afaik only Argaloth has parry haste, and hes a pushover so thats why expertise is not important - beyond GoSoT

I read somewhere that we want to be aiming for 5% hit, or thereabouts. I have messed around with gear to add and remove the hit element, and while I agree that mastery trumps everything, then dodge/parry and stam, I did occasionally see an avenger's shield whizzing off into the distance without the hit, and a 'miss' popping up every now and then. EDIT: Not had a taunt miss for a very, very long time!
Whether or not it really has any impact on my threat, I'm not sure. I don't seem to have too much trouble holding aggro!
I'd say a bit of hit is nice if you can get it, but don't make it a priority :)
