Halfus question

Just a quick question on Halfus, since I can't find the answer anywhere... When you engage Halfus(10 Normal), is there a way to interrupt his first Shadow Nova, or make it so that it's slowed to the point where you can interrupt it, or do you just gotta eat the first Nova, then the interrupt rotation/Wind Shearing Shaman goes on the interrupt?

It's possible (however very difficult) to interrupt it even with the haste buff. However, taking 1 hit from shadow nova won't kill you. In fact, if your interrupter gets upset that your group is wiping and starts to fail, you can
take several hits from Shadow Nova
and still survive the fight.

On 25 man I'm responsible for waking up the... whichever one it is, nether scion? The one that is between Halfus and the Whelp cage. Immediately on the pull I wake him up and 4 out of 5 times the first shadow nova is slowed. We've had it blow a couple times because I was slow to wake up the drake (the padlock clicky thing can be temperamental sometimes), but most of the time it works.
So yes, it's quite possible to get the first shadow nova slowed. And even if you don't, it's recoverable.

We very rarely (might as well be never) interrupt the first shadow nova. It's certainly possible, but missing one isn't going to mean wipe the raid. If you get it awesome, if you don't it's nothing to cry about and wipe the raid for.

Our Mage was getting somewhere between 30% and 50% of the hasted casts at the start of pulls, but it's more or less luck. Sometimes the drake activates in time, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't, you can get lucky and still land the interrupt, or you can fail.
In the end, if taking 1 Nova at the start is wiping you, you weren't going to beat the fight anyway.

The secret to interrupting the first Shadow Nova is dragging Halfus on top of the Storm Drake, so the tornado from the drake travels to Halfus immediately.
My guild has never had a problem interrupting the first Shadow Nova after I started doing this.

While my guild was working on our many attempts of Halfus (some are not quite raid ready so there were quite a few wipes) we devoted our war tank and rogue to Halfus to split the interupts. I'd say they were able to get that first one 75% of the time. However, not every raid is in a position to do this (it took us 10 or so tries but we finally downed him) and our strat is probably not the greatest but it does work. =)

Today our makeup was (don't ask me the dragon names, I suck with names) the three left ones; the melee haste, the stacking MS, and the shadow nova. We wiped a few times trying to get rid of the Shadow Nova, until I suggested getting rid of the melee haste first. The AoE was more healable than the stacking MS + the melee haste, and we 1-shot it after the strategy change.

Again, as long as you activate the Storm Rider immediately, you'll be able to interrupt the shadow nova with no problem
@skribs, you didn't activate Storm Rider and just ate the AoE Knockback and damage? What? I don't even see how that's possible.
As for composition, as far as I know you can get any combination of dragons.
