Here's how it works:
Four dig sites spawn on each continent: Kalimdor, EK, NR, and OL.
You cannot see OL sites until you reach 250 archaeology.
You cannot see NR sites until you reach 325 archaeology.
You cannot just go randomly dig in places, each dig will be a specific type:
Fossil (1-525)
Dwarf (1-525)
Night Elf (1-525)
Troll (1-525)
Orc (250-525)
Draenei (250-525)
Vrykul (325-525)
Nerubian (325-525)
Tol'Vir (450-525) these ONLY span in Uldum in Kalimdor, and then only rarely.
You may luck out and get a ton of troll sites. If this is your goal, I'd suggest digging in Eastern Kingdoms. Remember DO NOT SOLVE any items until you reach 100 skill from digging up artifacts.
Sometimes all 4 sites in EK will be troll. Sometimes all 4 will be dwarf. Sometimes you will get a mix of troll/fossil/dwarf/nelf. It's random, but there are more troll sites in EK than other areas.
Kalimdor is primarily Night Elf sites, with a few troll/fossil/dwarf sites here and there.
Once you reach 325, it may be worthwhile to check NR, because troll sites do sometimes show up there, especially in ZulDrak zone. If all the Old World sites are non-troll, maybe you can find some in NR before being forced to clear out the other zones.
Currently I am seeking the trinket that comes from Night Elf archaeology. I have all the common items, and most of the rares, but no luck on the trinket. GL with hunting the weapon!

so you dont just go look at your map,and then goto whereever the dig site is and start surveying? cuz thats what ive been doing but it sounds like maybe im doing something wrong
Your doing it right Foshizzle.

Does anyone know how the spawn timers work by chance? Meaning do you have (x) number of time to get to (Y) before they reset. I have seen node's spawn in the zone after digs. But I'm not sure on how this works.
Anyone else noticed this?

OK here's what you said in your first post:
like lets say i wanted to just do all troll digsites until i got enough to get that boa 2h sword.i couldnt just go to where they spawn and just start surverying.
And I said you can't just go to a zone and randomly survey *where there is not a dig site* and the type of artifacts that you will be able to obtain is random, depending on which dig site spawns.
Based on my experiences, it is extremely unlikely you would be able to level your archaeology by only visiting troll dig sites, simply because at some point all the dig sites available to you will be non-troll and you will have to clear those out and hope more troll sites spawn.
atomicwolf:
I do not think the dig sites reset after a certain amount of time. I say this because for the last week I have not visited any dig sites in EK, and yet when I check the map for EK the same four sites are active, two in STV (troll sites), one in Arathi Highlands (troll site) and one in Badlands (dwarf site).
The sites in NR are the same as well, all 4 vrykul sites, 2 in HF, 1 in GH, and 1 in SP.
The only ones that change are the ones in Kalimdor where I am surveying in hopes of finding the Night Elf trinket.
You cannot see archaeology nodes spawn like you can see mining nodes spawn. Once you have found 3 sets of artifacts, the dig site goes inactive, and you move on to the next one. Sometimes the dig site will disappear off the map, for example when you are in combat, and some players mistakenly take this to mean the dig is finished, but once you are out of combat it reappears.
Sometimes after you clear one dig site, the next dig site will spawn in the same zone. Obviously this is very convenient when it happens, but typically the next dig site seems to spawn at the opposite end of the zone.
