Now that have have some decent heroic 5 man gear and a few epic from crafting and factions, I'm more interested in gemming them with the good blue gems instead of just trash green gems that I have on hand.
What would be best preference for gems slots?
Meta:
Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond I presume. just the upgraded version of the most popular dps gem in Wrath.
Red:
Brilliant Inferno Ruby or perhaps
Potent Ember Topaz for more crit. obviously you'd want 3 of the
Brilliant Chimera's Eye if a JC.
Yellow: this slot is tough since we have to balance red vs blues for the meta gem. I was thinking of
Piercing Dream Emerald for getting more blue color gems than reds.
Blue: probably either
Rigid Ocean Sapphire for straight up Hit rating for raids, or perhaps
Veiled Demonseye for both Int and hit if reaching the cap is less of an issue.
Mostly, it does appear that Blizz wants players to desire to gem by slot color with the improved bonuses. though if the bonus sucks, might as well gem all brilliant or veiled for Int (and hit).

META
Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond (The currently accepted BiS mage Meta gem)
Ember Shadowspirit Diamond (what many mages are using until blizzard un-crazy-nerfs Chaotic)
RED
Brilliant(40 Int)
YELLOW
Lightning/Piercing/Sensei (20 Haste/Crit/Mastery, 20 Hit) for if you are low on hit, expect to be; Reckless/Potent/Artful (20 Haste/Crit/Mastery, 20 Int) for if you are hit capped.
BLUE
Veiled (20 Int, 20 Hit). (If you are short on hit, expect to be)
Timeless (20 Int, 20 Stam)
From
The Guide for Raiding MagesInt and Hit are way more important then Crit, even when gemming. Remember that Int gives a small amount of crit as well. I would just stick with Brilliant for red, unless you're a JC now.

FWIW, I'd recommend using
Ember Shadowspirit Diamond until Blizz fixes the chaotic gem requirements. It's much easier to gem for, and probably doesn't cost as much.
