I've leveled Druids a bit in my days, but every time I level them, I either play Boomkin, or Healer. This is my first time going Feral, and my Druid is now level 18. Yet, when I attempted to tank an RFC, we bombed it. Perhaps bear tanking is useless until I get some cleave abilities, but my health pool is ridiculously low as well.
My question is: When should I start tanking as a bear, and what should I be aiming for stat/health-wise at that point?

am not 100% sure about what u have or not as lvl 18.
but i think the reason u HP pool is low is maby becouse u dont have stam gear ?
a good tank has: good armor / massivly with HP / loads of dodge.
And uses abilities that couse high threat.. like maul (glyft hits 2 targets).
I think up to 40 enyone can tank dungeuns no mather what gear almost.. as long as u preform high threat. after 40 u should aim for tank gear.. like loads of stam / agi (for dodge) and extra armor..
it was to lvl 40:ich at classic time.. guessing its the same now.
hope it helped..

Well, glyphs aren't available until level 25, and seeing as there is very little strength+stam leather gear at low levels, I'm assuming it's kitty form for the next dozen levels?
I find stam isn't as huge as I thought it'd be. I got a belt giving 6 stamina, and a cloak giving 5 stamina. Switching to bear form only gave me about 40 more health than my Worgen form with both of these on.

yaa.. at lvl 18 its realy nothing to think about.. just cat and do quests..
had a friend that lvl up a new char last week.. took him 6 days to reatch 85.. so ignore instances until later in.. goes quicker =)
and when it comes to cat.. ONLY go for Agility on gear.. skip strenght..

Bear isn't really adjusted to low levels (when speaking to health/armor) but you really shouldn't have any problems tanking them.
If you have problems now, you'll have problems later.
Wow. In one sentence you hit the nail right on the head, and in the other you whip out some complete bullS. Yes bears are
badly
designed for low levels. Nobody in Blizzard seems to care. Even I had loads of trouble tanking with a bear at low levels.
And you are telling me that when i have problems on my level 30 bear, i am bound to have problems on my level 85 bear as well? Well let me tell you, that is not the case. Any decent player will stop having all problems at level 81.
Personally, i would recommend going kitty DPS, or Resto if you want faster queues. Tanking at low levels is just not worth the hassle, and all you get is frustration and bad opinion on bears. It just gets so much better at 81 that its stupid.

Thanks for the information, everyone. I'll just be sticking to DPSing until, say, 50? I'm already happy with my kitty DPS, usually topping or in second on damage, passing even BOA users. I'll invest in some agility gear as well, and start stacking that with some dodge and stamina.
Enjoy your day, everyone, and thanks again!
Edit: One more question: Should I keep a separate set for DPSing and Tanking at higher levels, or do they share pretty much the same sets?

only at 85 m8 u need seperate gear.
My suggestion is skip instances intil u are 80. then u can collect dodge/stam/agi gear and have it seperated. atleased on thouse spots u have dodge gear.. and use the other more usefull stats for kitty (crit/hit etc).. but u can also easy have the same gear aswell.. meening.. u will have it easy to kill all mobs enyway.. nomather if u have dodge gear on or not.
Just focus on lvl up fast.. and start worrying about gear and stuff until u 80+..
good luck

SKIP INSTANCES TILL WHEN? Thats a great way to get alot of groups po'd at you for not having a clue as to how to run a tank, lol. I hope I dont have to heal that guy! Instances at lower levels are for teaching you how. Questing and tanking are nothing alike. By lvl 60 (let alone 80), you will be expected to know how to tank by the others in your group. It may take until then to master tanking! My advice is to do as many instances as you can now as a tank if you want to do it later. Other players tend to be alot more forgiving at lower levels, as are the instances you will tank. One of the worst experiences in the game, is being a healer around lvl 62-64 because so many leveled hunters/rogues/mages get to switch to a DK and start tanking at lvl 60 with no clue as to how to be a good tank. IMO... only accounts with other leveled tank classes should get DK's . Waiting to tank is a BIG Mistake! Healers will HATE you, as will any other experienced players in the group.
Get the best gear that you can and go for it now! Take a look at the paperdoll character screen and mouse over the attributes to learn alot about what you need. You will want alot of dodge/agi and sta. Dodge can be from agi or can be a secondary on its own. AGI/Dodge>Sta>everything else, when picking gear. Make certain that you thoroughly understand which abilities cause threat as well as how often they can be used (cd period), then set up your rotations accordingly. Dont worry about low level healers' opinions so much now- alot of them may not be the best healers yet themselves. The main thing to strive for is to take all the beating yourself so that the healer doesnt have to heal around alot (= cause high threat!). If you keep the others safe, it is much easier for the healer to heal you alot than it is to spread it around. When a mob does score a crit on you, the healer can handle it if he/she isn't trying to keep everyone else alive, then switch you for a big heal. Talk to higher level tanks in game about gear and tactics, but talk to higher level healers as well. Sometimes the best tank coach is an experienced healer. they know who is good and bad by how much the aggro is spread around. Tanks and healers either love or hate each other in dungeons lol. If tank dies first, its probably the healer's fault / if others die first, its probably tank's fault...good general rule of thumb! (if you must choose between two who are getting hammered, save the healer first! He can rez them and prevent wipe!) Finally , gear is important, but not nearly as important as brains! good tank thinking is most important of all.
