A Newbie Question

I haven't played a hunter in a long time, and I decided to fire up another baby Night Elf hunter.
Pre-Cata I had a macro that just sent my pet in to attack, but it no longer works. I also can't use CTRL+1 to send my pet to attack. I understand that it's a really stupid question, but is there a simple macro out there that will just make my pet attack?
I've tried a couple macros out there, but none of them seem to work.
Thanks for any insight :)

/petattack should work.

Might also toss a
/cast Hunter's Mark
in the same macro. All depending on how you want to roll.

if your hunter is below level 10 you don't have control over your pet so nothing you do is going to make your pet attack except two things
1) You damage a target
2) An enemy damages you or your pet

The macro i SWEAR by is this
#showtoolip
/cast Hunter's Mark
/petattack
Since Hunter's Mark is totally free now (costs no focus) you should be using it every pull, unless the mob is green or gray to you. That sends in your pet to attack as soon as the mob is marked. a Must have Macro for hunters as it gets you used to using Hunter's Mark.
(Until you start raiding/doing dungeons)
I concur. I prefer to keep them separate in such settings. That way there's no stupid accidents =P.

I've always had that macro as my '1' button and have never had any problems with it personally. It's easier to click once to do it all than using two different buttons. But to each his own.

This. It's the reason I put pet attack on my Arcane Shot.
