Gear with Stam to survive, Stength to keep mobs on you and do more threat.
Tactics are simple; save your
AS
for multi-mob pulls or when it hits the fan, ue
HotR
on CD, (
CS
on single targets) use your HP on
WoG
for now and when you get it
SoTR.
However, make yourself a better tanks. look at what CDs you have, and use them well. Healer in trouble? Use Hand of Protection on them. Taunt mobs that ^&*!ty DPS aggro. Hand of Freedom from snares and so on. Don't be hesitant to Lay on Hands if you hit <15%HP.

Ah I see.
1. Taunt is
this
spell, you learn it at level 14. It means if an enemy goes to attack some other party member, you use it on him.
(Type /m in game. Create new macro, call it whatever. Type
/cast [] Hand of Reckoning
In the main box. Drag the icon onto your bars. This means you can just hover your mouse over the mob, and hit the key, and it will use taunt on it.)
2. Stances are for warriors, not paladins so don't overload your brain with it. As long as you have
this
active you'll be good to go.

As a paladin you have auras (you should be using Devotion aura).
Another taunt is
Righteous Defense,
which you should have gotten this level.
Also stack dodge/parry/block ( I'm pretty sure one was taken out, I just can't remember which). Look for defense rating as well.

Nah. AS is still on the single target rotation.
You're speaking from max level; just remember that at lower levels sometimes it can be tricky to hold aggro against these Heirloomed characters, and if it all goes to pot something like AS is going to be bloody useful.
But then we have two taunts so maybe not. Personal preference while leveling I guess.

Grand Crusader lets you use AS a lot.

I second going for dodge / parry rather than raw stamina, this will help (the healers) a lot when you have lots of mobs hitting you for not-so-huge amounts of damage. If / when it's possible of course. Before Cata there were only a handful tank items below level 60, but I'm pretty sure there are more of them now.
Avenger's Shield doesn't hit cc'ed mobs anymore since... well way back. Unless you aim directly at that mob.
If you're not afraid to start messing around with add-ons, try TidyPlates.

I'm using the "Neon" theme; scaled down a bit from the default value, because the plates are rather slim an don't block your sight too much, but just look at the options to suit your preferences.
This will allow you to instantly see wich mob(s) have aggro'ed someone else, and helps a lot with those mobs who turn away to cast some random stuff, even though you still have them on you.

Couple things that may help ya, and I'll try to oversimplify then for you.
First, understanding your role as a "tank". You are there to take as much of the damage as is possible, this should mean nearly all damage that is not either (a) AOE, or Area of Effect damage, which damages all players within a target area, or damage that occurs from an enemy that drops aggro, i.e, he turns and hits a random player, no matter what you do. So we will focus on the damage you will mainly be taking.
Your job as a tank is to get and then hold "aggro", or "threat". This means you piss the enemy off first, and continue to keep him more pissed at you than anyone else. To do this you need to generate "threat" on the enemy. Tanks have many abilities that increase their threat through more than just straight damage, as you will most often not be doing the most damage. As a Paladin, you biggest threat increase comes from a spell called Rightous Fury, or RF. You need to have RF cast at all times while tanking. It has no timer, but does need to be recast after a death.
Your second job as a tank is to "pull" the mobs, or make first contact with them whenever possible. Most players understand this and will wait for you to make the first move, but be ready to grab anything that either gets pulled by accident, or by impatient DPS. I would suggest that if your DPS are pulling mobs before you, that you let them know you are new to tanking, and to please let you assess the pull, and make the first contact. I would also add, that if they dont like this idea, you either drop and find a different group, or, simply let them tank that mob...live or die, if they wanna tank, let em.
As a pally, your typical spell used to pull mobs is Avengers Shield. It is a panged attack that will hit 2 or 3 targets with a fairly good amount of damage, allowing you to get a good start on threat. At your level this isn't as important, but later on when CC (Crowd Control) becomes more important, AS isn't always the best pulling spell, unless you glyph it to only hit 1 target.
Now, no matter how hard you try, mabs will get pulled onto healers or DPS. This is where your "Taunt" abilities come it. Taunting is a way of forcing the enemy to attack you, at least for a few seconds, no matter where you are on threat. IMO, being skilled at taunting is what seperates good tanks from great tanks. As a pally, you have 2 taunt abilities. Hand of Reckoning is a single target taunt and Rightous Defense is a multi-target taunt. For HoR, you target the mob and cast, for RD, you target the player and cast.
Since you are lower level, I'll leave it at that. You have plenty of time while leveling to work on your abilities. I would suggest not relying totally on LFD to level and learn, but to use questing as practice for your tanking. While killing mobs for quests, think of them as dungeon mobs, and that you are holding them off others. Work on your spell rotations and such while you quest. And lastly....READ ALL YOUR SPELLS TOOLTIPS, see what they do, and you will learn better when to use them.
As for gear, its simple, Stamina and Strength. If you happen across a piece that has some avoidance (Dodge, Parry, or Block), consider it a bonus. Once you reach 60 or so, avoidance stats become more important, but for now, just any good plate pieces with Stam/Str will do.
