The two charging combatants met and their swords collided, a shower of flames coming off of the paladin’s weapon. The fire startled Morec, and the Scourgelord fell back a few feet. He ran his faze over the paladin’s sword, then laughed.
“Lichbane, eh?” the death knight said, noting the runic pattern on the paladin’s sword. “You surprise me, paladin, using the runic magic of a death knight. Tell me; does this mean you have finally decided to abandon you foolish, Light-blinded ways and embrace the power of the Scourge?”
“Never!” Nilon yelled, charging the death knight and jabbing his sword at his chest. Morec knocked the strike away and then swung his sword to decapitate the paladin. Nilon ducked under the death knight’s attack, but the sword still managed to take off the tip of his right ear. He then jabbed his sword at Moec’s sword arm, but the Scourgelord blacked the attack with ease. He began to push the paladin back, using his unholy strength to quickly and almost effortlessly overpower Nilon.
“You were foolish to try and kill me here,” Morec said, grinning behind his helm. “This is Scourge land, the unholy taint of which only gives me more power. Power that you blood will soon also feed!"
“Never! Nilon yelled again, summoning a storm of holy energy to rage around him. The storm both weakened Morec and gave Nilon strength enough to break out of the black lock and run his sword through Morec’s stomach.
The Scourgelord roared in pain as both the paladin’s holy magic and the flames of Lichbane burned at him, but with a burst of necromantic magic he knocked Nilon away, his sword going with him. “Darkblade,” Morec exclaimed, gasping for breath and holding his wound as he stumbled back, “kill him!”
“Your minion won’t stop me!” Nilon said charging the other death knight.
Thragg and Tauman were holding their own against Miriam’s dark ranger handmaidens. Elemental magic protected them from the dark spells and arrows of the Scourge archers, but keeping a solid defense prevented them from dealing much damage.
The elder shaman quickly but reverently placed a totem of air onto the floor of the Slaughterhouse, holding his hand over it as he prayed to the spirit of the air for its assistance. The winds rose up in reply, sending the dark ranger’s arrows flying horribly off course and threatening to knock the rangers off their feet. Tauman took advantage of the distraction by lifting his mace and charging the two elves.
Rachel raised her sword to defend herself, but it did little to stave off the blow that knocked the two away like ragdolls. The tauren shaman then continued forward, pressing the attack while his master placed down a totem of the earth to envoke that spirit’s blessing as well.
In Valinaria’s duel against Miriam the battle was not turning in the Forsaken ranger’s favor. Miriam’s sheer hatred for her cousin, Sylvanas – and by extension all Forsaken – had driven her into a battle frenzy, fueling the unholy magic within her to increase the speed with which she struck with arrow, sword, or spell.
Valinaria merely fought on, able to parry most blows, counter some magic, and doge a number of arrows. She was taking damage, however, and those wounds would eventually add up and lead to her demise. Thragg noticed this, and attempted to call upon the elemental spirits to assist her as well. Unfortunately, he was forced to accept their decision not to help the ranger.
Nilon parried and counterattacked with a holy fury that few could have matched. The death knight that Morec had dispatched to deal with the paladin was being forced back while the Scourgelord himself stayed away from battle, mending his wounds with dark magic. The Darkblade finally managed to strike back, knocking Nilon’s sword out the way and leaving him open for a follow-up attack in the form of a blast of necromantic magic. Nilon recoiled from the strike, although he had just barely managed to keep the spell from taking its full effect on him, and responded with a blast of holy magic that tore through the death knight’s defenses and sent him to his knees.
Too weak to lift his sword because of the dark spell’s magic, Nilon kicked his opponent in the head, knocking his helmet off and revealing the Darkblade’s face.
“Hadrian?” Nilon exclaimed in shock and confusion.
“You’re surprised?” Morec laughed from behind the former paladin as the Darkblade got to his feet again. “With a paladin as powerful as my brother-in-law in our hands, did you actually think we would
just
kill him?”
“You damnable monster!” Nilon yelled at the Scourgelord, lifting his sword as he strength slowly returned.
“As if I didn’t know that already. Darkblade, finish him!”
The death knight lifted his sword to bring it down on Nilon’s skull. Before he had a chance to, though, the blood elf lifted his own blade – holy rage against giving him strength – and ran it through the undead Hadrian’s unbeating heart. The holy magic that came with the strike severed the grasp of unholy magic on him, but before he slipped into true death, he whispered two words; “thank you.”
Nilon pulled his sword out of the death knight and raised it as he began to walk towards the still-wounded Scourgelord. He had not taken three steps before a black arrow impaled itself in his left shoulder.
Miriam was standing over Valinaria’s motionless corpse, already fitting another arrow into her bow. Before she could let it fly she was knocked to the ground, screaming in pain, by a blast of magic.
Tauman lowered his hand and raised his mace, charging away from the bodies of the slain dark rangers and towards the Scourgelord. Morec attempted to knock the raging bull back with a blast of necromantic magic, but an elemental shield surrounded the tauren shaman deflected the bolt. With a scowl Morec resorted to creating a thick wall of ice to separate the three living from himself and the wounded Miriam. A glare later the Scourgelord fled outside, the Dark Ranger General staggering behind.
No! Nilon thought, he won’t get away again! The paladin roared in fury, slamming his sword against the ice wall and shattered it with the power of the light. He charged outside, only to see a massive frost wyrm flee towards the west, Morec and Miriam seated upon it.
“NO!” Nilon roared in rage, venting his frustration in the form of a wave of holy fire that consumed three encroaching skeletons. There was something twisted about this Light-based spell, though, as the flames that were brought by it offered no salvation for the trapped souls within the undead bodies. All that occurred was a painful, burning banishment into the Twisting Nether for the unfortunate damned.
Thragg walked up behind Nilon and placed a comforting hand on the paladin’s shoulder. “There will be another day for the Scourgelord to meet his final fate,” the aged shaman said. “Until then, you must not allow you hatred to consume you.”
Nilon looked back at Thragg. He nodded, but whether he had accepted Thragg’s sage advice or if he had simply rejected it were unclear. “I suppose that we shall all be heading back to the Pinnacle,” he said, walking away to looked down on the rest of Scourgeholme. “This day is won for the Light,” the pladain then said as he saw the Argent Crusade finishing off the last of the Scourge warriors. “So we will have time to rest.”
“For awhile,” Thrhagg concurred. “But then my apprentice and I will be returning to Orgrimmar.” He looked back at Tauman, a mix of disappointment and worry on his face. “I fear that we have spent too much time here in this dark land, and it is best that we depart.”
Nilon wasn’t sure what the old orc meant, but he nodded. “Let’s retrieve the bodies of the slain,” he suggested, turning back towards the Slaughterhouse. “They deserve at least a proper cremation.” To this, Thragg also concurred.

Writer's Commentary:
Another escape made by Morec, and Nilon does in fact seem to be treading a thin line of good and evil. Something seems to have spooked Thragg as well, but being as he and his apprentice will be leaving Northrend we may never know what it was.
One of my longer pages, I took my time with this one. From my point of view it seems to have been worth it in terms of quality. Also I think this page has the most named casualties of any of my works; Hadrian, Rachel, Valinara, and Areia are all dead now. This leaves me with only one option: kill more people in a future page!
Page 40 will be short, but it will summerize the aftermath of what happened to the champions of both sides of this conflict. After that, the 5th and final chapter will begin.
