i saw the new placeholder ads, asking me nicely to white list WowHead.
i temporarily white-listed Wowhead, to see if the ads are no longer animated.
It would be nice if we could meet in the middle; but i choose to not look at animated ads.
My feedback is to request that you don't use animated (e.g. flashing, moving, fading) ads.
Edit:
i will say i like the new
placeholder
ads. They're dimmed/grayed out; not distracting at all - with plenty of internal whitespace to keep the the web-site from feeling cluttered or crammed.

The only ads I absolutely despise are the ones that expand on mouseover, all others I can block out without AdBlock. Do you just not want to see them or do they cause undue strain on your system?
For the first, my opinion is either learn to ignore them out like I have or get Premium status.
For the second, I would almost consider that a valid use of AdBlock, but would still recommend Premium.
I actually got my Premium status because of mobile surfing. When your monitor's only 10", you need all the space you can get, and when your mobile computer is a netbook, you need all the processing power you can get.

All I use is NoScript, and I've had Wowhead whitelisted there as soon as I got it forever ago. There are some ad domains I've whitelisted, but Google, for example, isn't one I will. Sorry.
And I won't even
consider
Premium until they get the site's uptime under control, or get the site's speed up to what it was early in the year.

People very rarely adblock for ads anymore. The two biggest reasons currently are security and performance.
AdBlock just recently addressed the issue of people affected by anti-adblock scripts on sites:
Who does anti-adblock actually affect?
Ars Technica abandoned anti-adblocking after
one column
topped 2000 replies. From that discussion, the following rules were agreed on:
If you want users to whitelist your website (or ads on your website):
1) make sure ads load AFTER content, NOT before (having a page hang because Google Analytics is clogged up does not give users a good impression of your site)
2) closely monitor ALL ads appearing on your website (for both security issues AND inappropriate content (ex. gold sellers)) You're hosting the ads, it's your responsibility (again, users remembering your site for where they picked up that trojan ... not good)
3) no annoying Flash ads (and most of us would be much happier if you just didn't use Flash at all) (with both security AND performance issues, there's a reason FlashBlock is so popular)

I white-listed Wowhead after reading the thread on why they are asking us to. I don't mind supporting a site I use so much, but I can't afford to pay for premium subscriptions everywhere I go.
However, not more than 3 days later after re-opening Firefox with saved tabs and a couple of them being Wowhead, one of them had a flash ad on it that froze up my browser so much that I had to force close it. I couldn't even switch tabs to find out what it was to report it. So, back to the blacklist it went. Security and usability are most important to me.

It's two and a half years later. i once again decided to try unblocking ads on wowhead to see if they were no longer animated.
They still are.
Will try again in a few years.

Odd that you should say that pauladin, as I have yet to come across any that are animated - I may just be lucky the randomated ads..

Ironically, straight after posting this, there was an animated banner at the top of the page (only very slightly animated though, nothing insanely in-your-face about it)

They've already said the site would have to shut down if they got rid of animated advertising. That's primarily what companies use to advertise nowadays. Almost all of their income from advertising is from those utilizing animated ads.
There was a recent topic on this:

Blocking Wowhead's ads is really quite rude. You're denying them the money they need to stay going.
At least buy premium. It blocks all ads, you get some perks and support the site.

To me, it's hardly a question of social graces. I consider advertising, in general, to be unethical. The point about buying Premium instead is fair, so far as it goes... though it clearly doesn't go far enough to support the site on its own.

You consider advertising to be unethical?
Pray tell, then, how should Wowhead make its money? (and before you ask, I'm not trying to be facetious. I'm really quite curious).

The only thing I find unethical is that I have to PAY for Cable TV or Satellite or whatever and am still forced to deal with advertisements, lol.
At least when I pay Wowhead they don't force me to watch commercials/advertisements anyway. :P

In a perfect world, Premium subscriptions, donations, and perhaps merchandise. I know Wowhead can't run off Premium alone, and I don't know that all three of those would be adequate, either. And I realize that donations face legal difficulties, and I'm sure merchandise would be tricky due to Wowhead's obvious reliance on another party's IP. In short, no, I don't have a realistic, workable alternative.

Well, they do sell merchandise, but not many people buy it (granted, it's
Wowhead
not WoW merchandise).
Advertisements are simply the best way to support any website that isn't directly affiliated with some sort of media project, in my opinion.
So, again, if you're going to use Wowhead, blocking the ads is just rude (in my opinion), as you're taking their free service and blocking any revenue that they might get.

As the banner content is selected based on geoIP decision, you are not necessarily seeing the same banners as other people.
I.e, I just loaded the page in IE. An annoying EverQuest banner and Chrome banner right next to each other.
