Pay for an anti-virus software, things like Norton (better ones out there though), and they will usually take care of the virus for you. No need to buy a new one.
Free software may be able to do this, may not...not to sure though.

I'm about 110% sure that what you are talking about is a type of spyware called a "Highjacker" similar to a virus but the key differences are that it does not destroy data or have a way to spread itself to other computers(on it's own). The easiest way to fix this is to reinstall your operating system entirely... which is probably not the answer you are looking for... try installing and running the program "Spybot: Search & Destroy" from a burned CD (this should be downloaded and burned on a known clean computer, since the highjacker will recognize the installer and try to prevent the download from completing). Run the scans and approve it to do its cleaning. Should this not work you might take it to a local computer shop and ask them to help clean it off for you (or recover the data that you want to keep should they be unable to clean it). But seriously don't give up on a computer till you have tried everything and then asked a trained professional to try everything they can (as long as the cost is less then what the current computer is worth). If all else fails buying a new comp and taking a sledge to your old one works wonders for anger management.

For Viruses or Trojan Horses use AVG OR Avast! both free and work as good if not better than those you pay for.
(key word is "OR", never have more than one antivirus on a PC as they will fight each other and that's bad for everyone)
For Spyware/Adware download "Spybot: Search and Destroy" AND Ad-aware
scan, restart, scan, restart and do this a couple times to make sure that they don't reinstall themselves
(viruses/trojans/spyware are smart and instal themselves in multiple locations as to not be removed)

Hey everyone,
I recently got a Trojan virus on my computer, a 3.5 year old XPS, and I can't really do anything on it now (i.e. play WoW!), so I'm probably going to buy a new one. I was thinking that Macs would be great because no one designs viruses for them, but I wasn't sure if I'd have to buy a new version of WoW made for Macs (I used to see a lot of Patch notes concerning Macs but I never read them...). Also, if it's possible, I'd love to keep my computer (although I can't enter Shattrath without dying of lag (500 ram ftl!)) if I can delete/quarantine the virus, but McAffee won't do the job, nor Lavasoft's AdAware program; it changes my desktop periodically to an obviously fake message that tells me to click on the link to check my computer for spyware (which I'm guessing only triggers the virus in my computer? or adds another one?). Thanks everyone, please give me anything you know about either getting rid of the virus on my computer or Macs (and if so which editions for gaming, etc.). I appreciate the help!

Hey Nugua,
To get the Trojan off, try going to
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
... It's not a download, so the Trojan can't block it, and it ain't Symantec, so no animals will be harmed. After it's scrubbed off, try downloading Lavasoft AdAware to double check (It should work after the Virus is gone). After you've blasted the living hell out of that problem, try buying a good (NOT SYMANTEC! God, stop annoying me with those flippin' "renew" messages!) antivirus such as Kaspersky (I don't recommend McAffee either for various reasons). Also, get Mozilla Firefox. After doing so, you should get SiteAdvisor (Yeah, I know it's McAffee, but it was originally a different company, and is still good) addon, and possibly Adblock Plus (Don't worry, it's free) and NoScript (Though it can be annoying, it's effective).
However, if you want to get a new compy, I suggest you don't trash your old one, just try installing Ubuntu on it, with which you can install Wine (Windows Emulator) and play WoW on it, host a Vent server on it, or just use it for basic word processing and/or internet use.
My view on Macs: If you think they can't get viruses, you're just wrong. Most WoW keyloggers work on both PC and Mac. I find it super-hard to use them if you only have PC experience.
That's my view in a nutshell.

Don't buy a MAC
My advice:
Learn to build one ...
It's not that hard. It's like a puzzle.Next thing you know you'll be doing it with your eyes shut.
I'm building my 18th computer from "scraps" because I upgrade a lot just to sell. :)

Thank you EVERYONE SO MUCH!
With SUPERAntiSpyware program I found by searching on google for the virus I had, called New Malware.j or something. It's quarantined (or deleted?) now and my desktop doesn't keep changing and everything seems to be running smoothly now.
I will definitely take your advice (my friend told me to do the same) and get Mozilla Firefox. It's just another type of internet explorer, right? Also, just curious, why should I install it (I'm going to the same websites, so why is it easier for viruses to get in, in other words)?
I think I'll wait and see how good my computer is, and if no more viruses come along and it's running okay I'll buy some RAM and see how it works. After all, what can age do to a computer? Yes, as I said it
is
3 and a half years old, but it's still running fine even with only 512 MB of RAM :D (though I DO lag a ton in Shattrath).
Finally, I'd like to ask one final question, how easy is it to put RAM into my own computer, and how much more RAM would I want to buy to get no lag in any place in WoW (i.e. Shattrath)? My friend said he has 2k MB of RAM and that it runs smoothly, but maybe that's a surplus? However much RAM I should buy, how expensive will that amount be?
In bullet point form, my 2 questions are 1. how much more RAM should I buy (so that I get no lag in Shattrath) and 2. how much will that cost?
Just in case it matters, I have a Microsoft WIndows XP, Media Center Version, Version 2002.
Many thanks to you wonderful nice (and knowledgable!) people,
~Nugua
Answers!
1. Buy as much RAM as fits in you computer... Probably about 2 gigs, but you should aim for 4.
2. The price greatly varries... Check up on
http://www.bizrate.com/
for some great deals, and ebay (
http://www.ebay.com
) can also have some GREAT deals... I got a 4 thousand dollar graphics card for $500. Flippin' amazing, and it worked, no catches.
I'll also try to adress your other questions in a sec... (on page 2!)

PS: 1gb = 1024kb (But most people just say 1k kb for simplicity)
