Holy is viable as a levelling spec in the sense a knife is viable to open a can instead of using a can opener.
3-6k DPS is not "great". That's like...a real DPS class' autoattack; a tank DPSing as prot can do more, or a priest or druid spamming Starfire or Smite.
Haters gonna hate. ;3
3-6k DPS is just fine. I hardly see anyone pulling more than 6k in most heroics, save for AOE-ing. Even with a group average of 4k DPS, you'll have 20 second boss fights anyway. What's it matter if we're not pulling world record DPS numbers in heroics? Hell, overgearing the content is one of the best times to experiment outside the box -- there's very little chance of dying and wasting time because of it.
I do hear you though on the whole, "If you break the class, Blizzard will fix it" thing. They've clearly tried to cut down on "breaking" specs into doing what they shouldn't. And I totally agree they should. The thing that should be kept in mind, though, is that healers now-a-days are designed around being capable leveling specs, along with being able to help on damage in-between healing if they wish.
I totally think Shockadins should be able to put out good DPS. However, if they start to cross the threshold where they can out-DPS equally skilled players in equal gear in a DPS spec, then it should be drawn back a bit. Clearly, a healing spec should never out-DPS a DPS spec unless there is a glaring skill/gear difference -- ESPECIALLY if they're healing at the same time. :P
I don't have a holy spec and I'm not going to bother redoing all my bars/talents or screwing up a gearset to prove someone else's point.
No need -- pretty sure he made his point on his own. :P I've been pulling 4k throughout heroics in 200 gear with crap gems and no enchants. Is it sub-optimal? Sure. /shrug. I pull more as Prot. But I really don't give a crap for heroics, and I'm not running around as a Shockadin ruining your raids, so what do YOU care? You go construct your Lego forts -- we'll dig in the sandbox with sticks, and all have a good time.

Right, but the whole reason the spec was mentioned in this thread was as a means to solve a problem, not a fun novelty.
/shrug. If you want to both heal and DPS, Shockadin's the answer -- not going Ret in Holy gear. Really, if you want to heal
and
DPS, ANY healer will do. It's no doubt part (stress on "part") of the reason Tree of Life is no longer static -- to allow casting Balance spells along with being a healer. Same with Disco and Holy Priests having handfuls of talents to help them DPS.
We just keep throwing "being a Holy paladin that also heals" under "shockadin." I guess the answer should really just be, "Go Holy and spec into Denounce, etc." The term "shockadin" kind of infers it's a DPS role, which in this case, it isn't.

Ret is a fine healing spec for content sufficiently trivial that Shockadin is viable: i.e., heroics and lowbie raids. For DPS in such environments, it is vastly superior. I mean, why min-max for content so trivial anything goes? It's like putting on a hazmat suit because you want a better raincoat.
True enough, it is. But I think that's breaking the game more than a healer who is simply using the talents and abilities they already have.
And besides, being a Ret in Holy gear -- assuming almost every piece is Intellect -- probably won't pull as much DPS as a Holy paladin, and also won't be as secure a healer without the majority of talents like Holy Shock and bacon.
