It's current, so people will whine constantly.
Wait until it's a year or two old. Then it will automatically be better than everything.

One of the main reasons for the hatred of WotLK is that many people still had a bit of old-WoW nostalgia. The best raid of "vanilla", when overall challenge was taken into account, was Naxxramas Mk. 1. The veterans on the original game, as far as I can tell, became infuriated when Naxx Mk. 2 was released as a toothless, declawed version of the original (a
Lamarr
copy, if you can abide Half-Life references).
More importantly, it seemed that the game had been severely altered to allow for more casual play. This meant that the heroic mode of instances had to be much easier to allow everyone to see all of the heroic content and get gear. This also made veterans angry, because they were getting free epics; but, more importantly, people with no skill whatsoever were getting free epics.
Lastly, I believe the overuse of the Lich King in cutscenes had a negative effect on his reputation as the King of Death. "Oh, you just killed off my army, but I'm not going to kill you even though you are within arm's length of me. I'll go back to my castle and wait for you to kill me and take my phat lewts." This was a major change from Burning Crusade again, where the main bad guys were very secretive and generally avoided directly confronting their enemies.
Edit: Spelling.

Ulduar, Storm Peaks, the Basin and ZD were good.
Icecrown, ICC and the end of the Lich King....not so much.

This is exactly how I felt.
I loved Ulduar when it was first released. The Vehicle mechanic fight right off the bat was epic.
(for the first little while anyway, then it just became a long drawn out portion to the raid)
ICC wasn't all that bad. There were a few fights that I rather enjoyed.
Having to step into Naxx again did seem a bit lame and a bit half assed on blizzards part. But I still enjoyed it a bit.
(perhaps it was because it gave me a warm fuzzy nostalgic feeling.)
ToC was nothing but free lootz, imo.

I actually thought ToC was rather clever. While it generally is just a loot party, the whole idea, Lore wise and gameplay wise (both raid and dungeon) was rather neat.

It was, I had much more fun during BC.
Gear was more of a status symbol which was cool, people in tier 6, season 4 were recognized as good players.
Now everyone has everything.
I miss isle of quel'danas type dailies/world pvp, that doesn't exist anymore.

Was it better at the beginning of the expansion? Yeah. At the start you had to actually grind instances for drops,
Which is bad. Grinding is not fun.

You guys know what's ironic about all this? There was no gearscore, and recount didn't really win popularity either...a LOT less elitism.

I know I'll always be nostalgic about WotLK because it was the first expansion I was is when I participated in proper progression raiding.
For me, this.
and recount didn't really win popularity either...a LOT less elitism.

Because you definitely need an addon to check someone's gear.
...Okay. Maybe you do NOW (thank you inspect bug). But you didn't at the time.

I enjoy Outland questing 10x more than WotLK questing.
