People will be hard core no matter what, and if that's how they want to play, more power to them.

While I am not hardcore, not having new raid content to progress on leaves time and space for achievements like rep grinds, loremaster, grinding professions, profession and older-content related achievements etc.
I guess I would call myself a "medium-core" player, but not having progression to worry about leaves time for other stuff.
Point is, many hard-core players haven't left, and those that did, will surely return, with more people.

The new Heroics are deffinatly hard and I hope they don't change them. You now have to concentrate so you don't die.

If you're thinking droves of awesome players quit WoW when Wrath launched and will be coming back for Cata you've bought in a bit too much to over-inflated forum rhetoric.
The players that were skilled at Vanilla and TBC have been around for Wrath as well, they were those players that made things run so smoothly you didn't even notice them.
If Cata is going to be more challenging than Wrath then you are just going to see those players stand out more than in current content. They'll be the ones not smashing their face into brick walls in every instance.

Still, I do believe that a larger number of people will be more careful next time.
I think many many players in WoW are currently disappointed with Blizzard for not renewing the end-game content for a year. I truely hope this was a miscalculation by Blizzard that will not happen again.
Personally, I am convinced that if the same happens again at the end of the Cataclysm life-cycle, many players (a significantly larger number than now) will decide that once they cleared the final part (read: killed Deathwing) they will just hibernate (temporarily quit playing) until the next expension comes out.

....That's what they do anyways; they did it in BC when the non-Hardcore's couldn't get into BT/Sunwell, like you said for Wrath, it's the nature of the game. As for your second point; BT and Sunwell did it first.

I doubt that they will stay tough for more than a few weeks. The qq will start as soon as a majority of the playerbase hits 85 on their first toon. The devs will cave in, and cata heroics are going to be a wotlk style aoe-fest before february is over. Hastily introduced epic loot from vendors are going to render every single drop from the starter cata heroics useless except as enchanting mats, cause people wont accept the fact that a superior quality item would be enough to start raiding in.

I would consider myself hardcore a couple years ago. I was 3 days behind server first 80, I did all the end-game stuff at the time (ToC wasn't even in the game.)
The hardcore people quit because they get frustrated at watching everything they worked so hard for being given to Joe Shmoe that doesn't even know his class because it's too hard for his tiny brain to figure out how to play, at least in my experience.
We come back to see the new stuff, see it, cancel our subscription after we beat it so we don't have to deal with any more of Joe and his ilk.

Yet, Joe and his ilk have just as much right to play the game as you 'hardcore' people do.
