I really want to play Bioshock...

...But I can't make myself stay in the game! It's taken me 3 seperate sessions just to get to the introduction of Big Daddy; most people would probably pass that spot within 20 minutes of loading a new game.
I've never been into horror, or even thriller, in any medium, be it games, movies, or RL. The thing is, I've heard such great things about Bioshock that I'm determined to play. I just need advice on how to overcome my instinct to log out or alt-tab.
My only brush with what I consider to be my threshold of "scary" has been things like Saw 1, Final Destination (1, 2, 3), and RtCW.
So... can you help me?

Leave the lights on.
Alternatively: Play with a friend. I remember playing all of Silent Hill 2 with my friend and we would switch off when the other got too scared.

I don't think Bioshock's meant to be scary. Sure it's a gruesome look at human society at its worst, but there's nothing you can't kill, no surprises, and plasmids are overpowered.

I have fallen from my chair twice when playing Bioshock 1. There definitely are jumpy moments.

Well, I guess bright lights don't scare me. And I must have a better chair.

The beginning where you hear the female splicer going insane all over the place and you don't have a weapon. Scary stoof but I got through it quick.

In that case, don't ever play Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
A game created by mad men that will rip your sanity into pieces.
Bioshock is on the level of Mario Party compared to that.

There are two moments where a splicer spawns right behind you, and does not give any hint of his location. He waits until you turn around, and then attacks you. I remember that there was some surgery room with tables and stuff, with blood everywhere (these things dont tick me off really). Since there were no enemies in it, i went to scan the room for loot. When i picked something from one of the tables, i think it might be a Tonic, the entire screen dived into blue mist for just a second, and then it was gone. I was like... what? Checked the table, if i do not notice any changes, then i turned around fairly quickly, and there was this ugly ass surgeon with a rotting face like three inches from my camera. And then he proceeded to yell at me. Unfortunately, my reflexes did not stop me from headshotting him with a shotgun, but i was so scared that i flinched backwards, lost balance, and fell from the chair :P

Yes, it's things like these that have kept me from playing scary games. That's the type of thing that I'm trying to overcome so that I can enjoy a game like Bioshock.

Start with Call of Cthulu, it's mildly jumpy.

Best way is to mute the game and get some relaxing classical music going, for FPS I would recomend Richard Wagner, just remember to start with "The ride of the Valkyries" and you should be pwning asses hard and fast, after that I would recomend F.E.A.R. First Encounter Combat Recon, that little girl always scared the @#$% out of me and did see "The Shining" and Hellraiser" when I was around 10 and didnt even flinched.
If you dont belive that muting the game makes it better, try it with a horror movie first.

Why don't you turn off the video while you're at it?
Or just buy the game and spend your time looking at the back of it.
Scary games were meant to be scary. I don't see the point in taking the factor out of it. :(
If it's too much, just take a short break.

BioShock tries to be scary for about three stages, then it forgets all about the horror theme and it becomes just a steampunk shooter.
Play through it, that game indirectly changed my life.
