It's fine; best way to kick everyone out of the cities.

It's only a bad idea for the players that just started during TBS or WotLK. I played during vanilla, and it was quite the adventure waiting to see what spells I had waiting at my trainer... This just brings it back.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##Gnub##DELIM##Fixed filter-bypassing - please don't do this. It's there for a reason.

I'm kinda split about this, to be honest.
Really, I am. There's just so many reasons the portals should remain and so many reasons they should not.
(I'm glad I haven't used Jaina's Locket...yet)

I just had to come out from lurking to say something on this, I've seen people arguing back and forth on this for awhile, but something that nearly no one has pointed out is what a massive headache getting achievements done now will be. Going for Love Fool? Tough luck, you'll HAVE to pvp to even see a Troll Rogue or w/e the class/race combos are.
Regardless of any other argument, this is what bothers me the most, especially as an achievement junky, I was considering going for the Meta on my alts (for the barney proto drake) -- but this change means the only time I'll encounter the other faction is in PvP areas (and anyone remember how difficult it was to find that "rare" class/race combo? Imagine how much more difficult it will be now that you have to WAIT for one to come try to kill you!).
Leveling through the various areas as well, Outland or Northrend, is going to be a pain because to get back to the old world you'll have to fly to the extreme southwest or southeast ends to take a boat, or head back to the dark portal (and then fly for 5-6 minutes or more) to get back to Stormwind -- or for Horde to what, UC? ouch -- which is insane to get to an AH). There are already portals to SW/Org at the dark portal actually, but players can't use them.
This seems like a shortsighted, last minute, change. As if no one thought it through. Why did Shatt lose it's portals? Did Khadgar go on vacation? At the least they could have added a level requirement to the portals, set them up so 81+ can't use them, but anyone below can. Or, better yet, give people above level 81 a reason to stay in the old world cities. I still think the best suggestion has been to add portals to SW and Org (only) to Dalaran and Shattrath; and then have portals everywhere else in SW and Org so there's no incentive for levels 81+ have to hang out in Dalaran.

I almost bought
Jaina's Locket
on Friday, because I figured it might be a good idea to be able to get to the portals in Dalaran. It "only" cost 20k, so it was pretty cheap. And even if I didn't use it myself, I could sell it for a pretty chunk come Cataclysm.
Luckily, I didn't get a chance to log on WoW for a few days and then I read that article on mmo-champion on Monday.
Phew! Saved 20k I can now set aside for other expenses...

Ummm... What? Those portals at the Outland side of the Dark Portal ARE usable by players.

It makes perfect sense. Shattrath is deserted as it is, the only people who are there are those leveling through Outland or going back to do rep. The same will be true of Dalaran when Cata comes out. By replacing the portals with class trainers. And there's a recent blue post stating they'll add auctioneers to both.
So, with class trainers and AHs in both, leveling players (as well as those doing rep/loremaster) won't have to go back to the old world to use the AH or class trainers. It's a smart move.

When did that change? Last I remember they were there for visual effect - npcs charge out - but otherwise the serve no purpose.
This does effect getting around. Unless there are new portal to every city I won't be the only one aggravated at waiting for boats or trams. There's really no denying that. Side note - the dal to shatt portal was nice for getting to Outland for w/e reason. Are we now expected to go through the dark portal instead?
If there was already a reason to leave dal then there was no reason to change it. If the old world is as important as people claim then portals wouldn't have made a difference. After all why hang out in dal? No dailies, cata trainers, or reforging, or w/e. It would have ended up like shatt.
Part of my feeling on this is that it's forcing / breaking gameplay for players - like there should be a choice. Today players hang out in sw or if or org or uc - it's not always dalaran. Removing portals from both cities seems like overkill. Either cata would bring change to the game and nullify dal or blizz failed in that regard and instead has decided to force players out.
I'm rambling now and quite tired so I'll stop now :) - btw, ah in dal makes my engineer sad. Hope they add another ah bot somewhere (come on Jeeves-like ah personal bot!) - then I could just setup shop on a nice tropical island somewhere....

New blue post regarding the removal of portals:
The reason the portals from Shattrath were not removed from Outland when Wrath of the Lich King released is that there was a new central hub with portals to all major cities in Northrend. There is no longer a neutral city hub which both factions will be using in Cataclysm. We want to ensure visiting the major faction capitals is still the most attractive thing to do in Cataclysm, rather than having people use Shattrath and Dalaran as easy connector hubs.
To make up for this, we'd like to add class trainers and Auctioneers in Shattrath and Dalaran for those leveling through The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King content.

For those speaking about the Locket... just buy the Kirin Tor rings; 8k gold(minus rep discount), boom, half hour teleport to Dalaran all the time.
