While waiting to get a Beta invite, I decided to take a little break playing WoW. I signed up for WAR (Warhammer Online). There is one option players have (Which I LOVE) which I would upsolutely love to see in WoW, and that is to DYE my armor.
You click on one of the merchants in the game (Usually the ones selling mats for the available professions in the game) which gives you the option to dye your armor a different color. A window comes up where you can select one piece of the armor you want to change, or, if you want, you select the option "apply to every piece of armor" (or something like that). You get to choose from about 13 different colors. I especially like this option just for the fact that it sets you apart even more from other players. It only works on armor, not any weapons, which is still awesome. You can even dye each individual armor with different colors, if that is what you want.
Again, I would love to see that applied in WoW. Not sure how difficult this would be to implement though.

Everquest has allowed you to Dye armor for sometime now, like since 02 or 03. Although it was a eyesore seeing those big trolls and ogres running around in all pink armor it was still funny and made it to where not everybody looked the same.

@Wowkopf: The problem is not the implementatinon. That's verye easy. Blizzard do not allow it for the following reasons:
1) Extra Lag. It make you to load extra data because you have to load the color for every players in your sight, for every armor pieces. Unlike armor texture, you cant have the color stored on your computer.
2) Killing the atmosphere. I don't really want to see everybody running around in mismatched armor color. There was enough of that in Vanilla and TBC.

The post I read on this subject back on the beta for vanilla was as follows...
They want an experienced player to be able to look at another character and by looking at the armor they are wearing, be able to tell 'what' armor that person is wearing. So the experienced player can know what kind of set bonus the other player has, and a general idea of how powerful that other character is with a simple look at their in-game avatar.
Since then the armory has been created, and there is a whole world of information available by inspecting other players in-game that was simply not present back then. Their thinking may have changed by now, but i doubt it.

Mid-BG you can't atl-tab to look at the armory of a character, unless you do it in the preparation phase of the BG but sometimes people join the BG when it has already started so it isn't a very effective way for telling how powerful a character is. It is easier to see what armor they are wearing.

But if we were able to recolour our gear that means Blizzard couldn't do that and call it "new" gear

But seriously :
The best way around the problem is to change the BASE color of the armor model, and not the texture itself. This way, it applies a TINT to the artwork, rather than a completely new texture. Think of it like putting red Koolaid into a clear glass pitcher - even though the pitcher is red, you didn't really re-color anything except the fill.
I'm a programmer that worked on more than 2-3 MMO's so far (meh, kid's MMO (or pre-teen)), but still, you would be amazed by the amount of feature we have in those games) and that's pretty much how we usually do it.
The only problem is : They gotta add a dynamic parameter (so everyone can actually change the value of it) to every piece of gear in the game, and actually GET this data for piece of armor for every character in your view, wich is the same as before, they actually gotta make a call to their SQL server (or Oracle, or whatever) that say "Hey, gimme his gears, oh !@#$, I'll need his color too (extra call, or inner join in a call, but that still reduce the overall speed of the call ... and multiply it by n (n being the number of avatar displayed))!"

Well, okay, I understand all the so called lag issues but, come on, what would happen if they go the other way, to simplify the graphics even further? I think as of now, the WoW graphics are pretty basic, no? I understand WoW wanting to keep that "cartoony" graphic style. I think one step up would not be that big of an issue in my opinion. Considering this game came out in 2004, what happened to the computer world in the last 6 years? A lot? Heck yes, a heck of a lot. I remember the computer I used 6
years ago. Considerably slower than what I have now. I am sure that a huge percentage of people out there playing WoW do have better graphics options then they had six years ago.
I have commented on this issue before on how amazing the graphics are in some other MMO's and I do understand that Blizz wants to keep that cartoony style but, especially in THAT case, I would love to see some customization, like that dye option.
In regards to that pvp comment that players want to look at the opponents gear to see what Tier they wear,....lol,....those are the players that I one shot, IF people even do that. I could care less what Tier or gear that player is wearing. I just want to nuke him/her down asap.
Anyway, thanks for all the comments.

It's also about profile; having multi coloured armour, in say pvp, would make it hard to figure out just what exactly your up against; nothing like mistaking a level 80 in his bright neon pink armour for low arena gear... then get a face full of Wrathful death when you had a chance to escape.
