Just goes to show once again that copyright is only enforced in favor of large companies.
(See the 2005 Sony DRM fiasco; they were/are guilty of commercial copyright-infringement, and didn't even get a slap on the wrist)

I dont know what micro transactions are, but if they made 3 million off of hosting private servers, Im impressed. My opinion will be unpopular, but I feel bad about these guys. They're screwed financially for the rest of their lives. Also, as someone that plays (or did until whenever) and pays the 15$ a month, I honestly do not care if anyone plays on private servers for free. I do not care if people cheat, hack, buy gold, or pay for leveling services on WoW.
I think this whole thing is as dumb as arresting and making people pay tons of money or jailtime for downloading music online illegally. It hurts nobody, and makes companies look like money grubbing bullies. Oh noes, that 3 million could have gone to a needy CEO that cant afford to get that solid gold toilet hes been wanting this Christmas.
Im only half serious and half joking fyi :P

Mistake 1: Hosting a private server.
Mistake 2: Making a profit off of said private server
Mistake 3: Not showing up to court when sued
Had they shown up, I would guess that the judgment would be an eighth of what it was. By not showing up in court at all, the judge was pretty much bound to award them a default judgment of for however much Blizzard had asked.
Regardless, for those stating how these idiots' lives are ruined now: They'll file bankruptcy, and in seven years they'll have a fresh start. Hopefully this scare will cure their idiocy. They're lucky that they weren't involved in something where criminal charges could be levied.

In response to the earlier points regarding licensing private servers, I can't see Blizz ever doing that for one reason in particular. You play on a private server that is licensed, it has the Blizz name attached to it, but Blizzard would have little if any control over quality, despite any quality control issues invariably reflecting on them in the eyes of the paying punter.

I doubt that Blizzard expects to recoup the majority of that cash. They may get some of it out of garnishments, before the people involved can file for bankruptcy - but I suspect that this is more a move on Blizzard's part to actively enforce their copyrights and trademarks.
Failure to do so can lead to losing your intellectual property (as evidenced by the creator of Calvin and Hobbes' loss of his characters' trademarks after failing to go after the makers of the Calvin window stickers).

hahaaha i love how wow players see private servers as a crime worse then murder
Blizz doing this to one private server is as big a joke as Metallica shutting down Napster. They really owned the mp3 community, yup mp3's don't exist on the internet anymore!
lol...

I don't know about you, but if I were the creator of a multi-billion-dollar MMO, I wouldn't want people stealing it and making money off of it.
And as xaratherus said above, it's more than likely an exercise in maintaining control of their copyrights so that other parties cannot use them while citing Blizzard's lack of action as evidence to protect themselves.

The real crime is that public schools don't hold session all year round, six days a week.
This is the first time I have ever seen a post like this on the internet

Kinda feel bad. Whatever kind of errors these people made, not sure I could justify ruining their entire lives over it. That's what $88 million is going to do. They're finished.
(And to you people who said they had it coming... I disagree. Imagine dropping litter - you know it's illegal, but what would you think if they charged you $1.5 million or something for it :O Illegal where I am at least)
This is like splitting your cable connection and selling it to your neighbors. Or making copies of your movies/music and selling them. That's not legal.
Your comparison is terrible. I don't make money at the expense of the soda company by tossing the empty can in a ditch.
You have 100% missed the point.
Legality - punishment. That's what my post was about. Not how the money was made.
And if I found out someone was nicking a bit of my internet, I'd tell him to &*!@ off, I wouldn't sue him for like 88 million :)
And remember, you seem to have interpreted my post as fact, and therefore it can be wrong. No, just no. It's my opinion, deal with it please.

You wouldn't be able to do that if everyone was stealing your product...
HAHA! No Scrooge McDuck vault swimming for you!
