Someone mentioned in the comments of the article that the owners of the private server company never showed for the court case, which is why the amount is so large.

That's some high amount of money they have to pay but they deserve it. Not because they run a private server but because of the microtransactions (really, 3 million dollars!).
It is not like Blizzard will start hunt down and sue all people that run a private server in the world, this private server runners in particular had made some huge amount of money of Blizzard's game so they (Blizzard) decided to take action.

I still maintain Blizzard could get even more money if they just went and allowed private servers to pay a royalty fee and become legit, and charge a percentage of the monthly fee a lot of private servers charge. These private servers operate basically the same as Blizzard itself, although on a smaller scale, and maintain their own servers.
This would put an end to the slew of "Plz give Vanilla/BC servers" and allow those who don't like the direction Blizzard is going to still play the game THEY want, while Blizzard gets a cut of the profit at no additional cost to themselves. This would also put the smaller private servers out of business because people would only play on "licensed" private servers that don't allow you to hack the thing yourself but provide "frozen" experiences as of the end of Vanilla or end of TBC.

Private servers run nothing like retail server, even if they claim to be blizz like servers there will always be problems, mainly with raid boss scripting and any type of phasing and other things. Private servers are worthless and blizz will actively keep on getting the ones that make a profit off them shut down, glad to see !@#$%^&* finally get their asses handed to them.

People Complaining about latency that some countries only wish they could play at.
The issue with that statement is that irrelevant of belief, were Blizzard to allow private servers and get royalties there would be a great influx of Blizz stype private servers without the issue of things not working, bugs etc. Blizz endorse = Blizz ensures they run a bit more smoothly.

Not only that but Blizzard's argument is always "It would cost too much to maintain separate versions". Endorsing a private server takes this argument away because the private server is doing all the maintaining and server maintenance.
Despite what you believe, good private servers run almost as smoothly as Blizzard's own servers. I know quite a few people who choose to play on private realms (despite my trying to convince them not to) and they do exactly what we do, without any serious problems; their experience is identical to what mine is paying Blizzard. All these servers are missing is an endorsement to make them legit, and Blizzard could easily profit while doing nothing themselves.

The problem with that, is that there has to be an incentive for those running the servers to pay such a royalty. What would that be? And secondly, such a royalty would have to be passed on to the users, making it either an extremely customized server (ie. locked to level 60 or 70) or a micro-transactions server, which is against the whole spirit of WoW. Making people pay just to have access to a private server wouldn't work, given they could just use the official servers instead.

Or blizz will just you know, continue supporting their own servers and not give a %^&* about some crappy private server.

That would be the point. Most people I know who use Private servers, or would use them if it was legal to do so, would want Vanilla or TBC servers that are locked to 60/70 and don't allow for nonsense like paying money to get full epics.
That would be an incentive for people to pay the private server as opposed to the regular one. Someone like myself who never got to experience Vanilla or TBC as it was "meant to be" and wanted to could pay to legally play on a private server and get that experience, while paying Blizzard to play the current expansion.

Or they could just form a Classic Raiders guild, or TBC guild, lock XP at 60 or 70, and PLAY ON A REAL SERVER instead of violating the terms they agreed to when they installed the game on their computer. Not that hard.
You miss the point though. Most people who want to do Vanilla/TBC don't want to do it using the current incarnation of WoW,with the talents and classes. They want to do it
as it was
, and unfortunately you aren't able to do that with Blizzard's servers. Therefore, private servers do fill a void here, whether you want to believe it or not. Blizzard is missing out on possible revenue by NOT taking advantage of this and basically telling anyone who disagrees with the direction they choose to go "Too bad, play the way we tell you or leave"

to play on a private server you need to agree to some terms just as you agree with blizzard's terms... yet everyone knew they are using a blizz product and agreed to terms that conflict blizzard's... those guys set up the thing, but the users of their service are just as guilty
Who would you rather go after?
The person stealing your product and selling it.
or
The person buying your product from some unauthorized vendor.

That's what you get for being a thief.

Sounds like scare tactics to the other private servers. Maybe Blizzard will start purging them like they did back in 2008.
