Personally I judge my DPS based on other members of the raid and their class/gear. There are some standards you really have to hit, but I'm not one for number-crunching. Beating other Death Knights on stand-and-deliver fights has always been a pet hobby of mine, especially with the amount of whispers I get about dual-wielding shaman weapons. :p Same with beating AoE classes on trash pulls - I know the damage meters don't mean much, but doing plenty of damage while not pulling threat always makes me feel like I'm doing my job well. I hope that people DO look at the recount and see the smarmy frost knight topping AoE damage and pull their socks up.
Ultimately, I think, you should look up fights and see what kind of DPS you should be doing to beat enrage timers, and see if you're comfortable with that in practice. If you are, then you can take up utility roles as well. I feel like it's up to you as a player to work in concert with your raid and do the best you can to pick up slack where it's needed. Once you've achieved good DPS that satisfies the requirements of the fight, of course.

I really have to think that people buy their accounts. How can you get mostly ICC gear and not know how to out dps a fresh 80? I don't know anyone without recount. How can you see yourself with low dps with a high gear score and not wonder what's wrong..
Do people get boosted? Buy gold to get gear (and Kingslayer title)? I mostly see rogues, mages, and hunters with nice gear, good talents, gems, enchants ect. And can't pull their gear score. Hell, my Druid at level 64 can pull his GS single target. (Full BOA, about 1600 gs)

My level 80 Arms Warrior was recently at the 3.5k GS mark. I was in a group for Heroic Drak'tharon Keep. I beat a 6k GS warlock.

Had a warlock in ICC10 doing 5k DPS in full Ilv264 gear.
Also had a hunter on Pachwerk25 doing 1.2k
I did an ICC10 on my alt and hang on. The tank was 3th on damage done on Saurfang. BEAT THAT.
Also was 3th on DPS while tanking twins in ToC10 once...

Is 3th before or after 3rd?
2 above
3-4 below the tank.

I was once invited to a PuG ToGC10 on my hunter, and was congratulated by one of the people (who I'd never seen before) on being the first hunter they'd run with on my realm beating 3k DPS.
I was, quite ashamed actually, to hear that.

If I may offer one 'answer' to your musings...
I got my partner into Wow and as her first character she rolled a hunter. The only other games she has played before wow was The Sims and Civ 3, so the first thing to note here is that she runs with both her mouse - WASD is a foreign concept to her. I have told her about this, but dear god, I try not to get 'The Look' as much as possible (Other males in relationships know what I'm saying) so I don't bring it up too often.
She specced into Beast Mastery as it helped her level and her cat does most of the work. She loves the Auction House and one of her primary goals is to make as much money as possible and collecting pets/mounts/achievements. Killing stuff is probably not even on the top 10. She got to lvl 80 and hates levelling so doesn't want to make another toon, plus she likes her pet as it's like a companion and no other toon really has this sort of thing... so she'll be on this hunter for some time to come.
One night recently, the guild was short of players and decided to take her through ICC to show her around and got her to stand in certain places and attack this that and the other... that night alone she got 6 pieces of gear. She does a bit of PVP (for the shards/tokens to buy mounts/gems) and a few other guild orientated walk-throughs. She has a gearscore reportedly of about 5.2k but I'm pretty sure most (lvl70ish) people could take her out in pvp 1 on 1.
Recently I got her to come through The Nexus with my 72 Warrior tank and she got abused by someone who was just very rude. No appreciation that she wasn't after any loot, and was just there for the dungeon achievement and to see the place. She was pumping out enough damage to keep up with the others but still was criticized that her rotation was crap and her glyphs and talents were rubbish, and I'll be the first to admit they were. However she was still beating the other DPS (only just) and was not slowing down the run at all. She SHOULD have done a hell of a lot more DPS, which seemed to be this guy’s problem. Anyhow after the run (she almost afk'ed out a few times from being upset from this guy) she talked to the guild (a bit of a first here as she is generally quite quiet) and they suggested builds and glyphs and stuff for her. She dropped the 1k gold and was looking up cookie cutter builds for pve/instances. Now she has done this, she is developing slowly. Her usage of WASD is still non-existent though haha.
I think I personally am one of the higher skilled players of the game. I've been playing since the start of this game. I know about the majority of classes and how they work, I know about how the game interact with players, I know blah blah this and blah blah that, but I
still
find myself learning new things on a constant basis. And because I am aware of learning things myself, I understand the huge knowledge gap that must exist in new players today. So I believe there are people who are rubbish at the game but do have the best intentions. A little empathy can help. Sure there are complete idiots out there, but I find more often than not it's ignorance rather than arrogance that is the key player.
So yes, I agree
Most people are terrible at this game.
and a lot of the fault is to be blamed on Blizzard for making the levelling system too fast nowadays. I hope you guys are nice to these people the majority of the times, some of them are just trying to have fun, and are happy to take on board good natured instruction if offered.
Anyhow, didn't mean to turn this into a lecture, but I thought the thread seemed to be heading down an ugly path...

Exactly right! They'll never learn if we don't, gently, give them a hand. Mind you, we do have to be careful of our own unintended arrogance and not devolve into lecturing. I've had a few whispers after pugs about frost DPS as a DK, rotations and suchlike, and it's quite enjoyable to discuss what works best with another keen player who's taken the time and effort to ask you about the spec and how they can improve with their own.
One thing I can't stand is ignorance and arrogance in people who will be complete jackasses. I get dumped on fairly regularly for 'shaman weapons' and lectured about poor itemisation. Don't be one of those people - know what you're talking about before you get started.

At level 75-76 I replaced T6 by Northrend instance items. At this point every is able to break 1500 dps. I had T6 and was able to break the number, but other players didn't have T6 and were unable to break 1500 dps. At this stage of the game gear still was an indication for skill.
3 dps at 1500 is what it takes to defeat heroic Stratholme in time. In level 80 blue gear one would do over 2k dps. But at the first stage of the expansion it was hard to find 3 dps accounting for 4500 together. Later is became easier as one dps could do 4500 dps on his own, dragging along 2 beanbags.
Now we got 'free' T9. But it takes considerable time to get 210 normal emblems. I expect learning while doing these odd 35 instance runs. WRONG, dps is just as crap in T9 as in level 76 blue items.

Also the LFD tool pits normal dps with common dps, on purpose. This patch added T9 for the commons, but also removed the incentive to play like having it. LFG should be renamed to 'Looking For Boost'
