Because, assuming people in your raid do their jobs and pull their weight, DPS will be a good indicator of whether they are doing their DPS rotations right.

You do about the same DPS on most bosses, while you do vastly differing total damage, which makes it hard to judge how competent a damage-dealer you are.
That's why people look for DPS.

Why is everyone so hard core on DPS then?
Simple people need simple things in order to (think that they) understand how things work. For someone like that, GS (Gear Score) or DPS are the only yardsticks they understand. And if they die in the process, it's always the healer or tank's mistakes - never their own.
This morning on an alt (resto druid) I was in a Gnomeregen group. We're doing the tunnels and one of the two locks decides to go hunting targets inside the tunnel. Naturally someone tells him to stay out of the tunnel, but he ignores it. And naturally the tunnel caves in on top of him, killing him.
REZ ME!
Sorry guy, but you're out of line of sight and I can't rez you.
UR FULL OF IT
REZ ME!
Allow me to explain in small words. You went into the tunnel, you were told not to, the tunnel caved in, you died. Now, I can't rez you since you're out of sight. Have a nice run.
@#$^&$^*#@$
For someone like this, DPS means a lot. They're simple enough and selfish, to where DPS score means everything. The more damage they can do, the happier they are. What it means to the rest of the party, means little to them.
What? That's a total non sequitur.
Just like GearScore, theres a lot of people who use it effectively, and there are others who abuse it. Stop trying to put everyone in the same group.
Also, Damage Done is entirely dependent on your group. If their damage done is lower, yours is higher. Its a terrible judge of how well you do DPS. Someone who does 9k DPS on a fight in one group can have the same damage done as someone who does 3k DPS in another group.

DPS is cool because you can pop your cooldowns, burn your mana, stand in a fire and die. Because you drop from combat where you die, dps will be superb.
Damage done is not cool because you have to put 5 to 10 minutes of effort into a fight.

Wow....This looks like pure deja vu...
Damage done is what you wanna look at all the time. When someone dies with very high dps, it does no good for the group. If someone who does moderately lower dps stays alive thru the entire fight he can do more damage done on the boss which is in the end the only thing that matters.
This.

Damage done is what really matters.

You should consider to watch Damage done to adds, Player Activity and Cleanse Count.

Damage done shows how much someone contributed to the kill in terms of damage (not in terms of healing/dispelling/tanking).
DPS shows your potential. So lets say you normally have 10% more damage done on every boss kill than the second highest dps'r. Does that *alone* mean you're a good player? no.
It maybe that your guild is doing first wing in icc 25 and your highest dps is 8k, everyone else does 7.2k.
8k is not a good dps (with current icc buff). But the person doing 8k is contributing more than others in the raid group.
Boss X has Y health. So a very good guild with 15k average dps, will still have individual member dps do (Y/ the number of dps) damage on boss. However the boss will die twice faster, than in the hands of the first guild.
So basically use damage to see how well someone contributes to your fights.
See dps to check if they are good on world-level ... most people only care about who's good in their guild - for which damage-done is a better indicator.

I did 40k DPS last night.
I'd popped all my CDs on a huge AoE pull.
Does that mean I'll be doing 40k on a boss?
Your point being...?
When people ask for "8k+ dps", its assumed its on a boss.

Simple explanation would be:
DPS = Damage per second : Depends mostly on your gear and your skills rotation.
Damage total = How much damage you have done over a fight. Affecting factor would be:
1. Duration of staying alive during a battle
2. Any disconnection during a battle.
3. DPS if you stayed online and did not die during a bttle.
To measure DPS, you do it on a Dungeon boss / raid boss.
To measure Damage in total, you measure it after a long raid battle.
These two numbers provide a total depiction of your performance. Without each one, it would be inaccurate to determine a player's performance in a raid / dungeon.
Sometimes in a raid, you are required to damage an particular add if it spawns. Therefore it is normal your DPS might go down, but your performance is based on how many damage in total done to the add.
Hope my explanation is not confusing to you.

People always argue about damage done > dps.
However the immediat response you get to this is that 4k dps over 300 secs > 40k dps over 1 sec.
If you even have an idiot dps that dies the first instant, than you shouldnt be even comparing his dps with others.
If people always assume that a noob will die after the first second, than i see no point in even comparing.
