EDIT: Nevermind.
This is one of those moments where reading data-mined material can be sorely misleading. I talked a bit about these changes yesterday here:
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?sid=1&topicId=27497534774&pageNo=1#14
Most of these abilities have not changed for level 80+, however, they've been changed to scale from 1-79. As an example, Ambush deals a flat 190% weapon damage on live realms. With these changes, it now deals 90% weapon damage when first learned, and increases up to 190% again by the time you hit level 80.
We made these adjustments because healing and damage-dealing at low levels has been way too powerful. These changes will make more sense when you get into the game and see for yourself.
EDIT2: Never mind again. Looks like the level 85 versions of the warlock spells were indeed nerfed by 12% base damage. The above post seems to be talking more about the warrior abilities (which appeared to have massive nerfs, but now the nerfs look a little more sane).

Holy nerfbat...this is pretty irritating. Admittedly, I haven't played beta...but this magnitude of nerf-age better sure as hell be justified.

Or you know, you could READ.
It is base damage so that low-lvl damage doesn't get out of hand.

It's true that the base damage was lowered so low level damage doesn't get out of hand, but base damage still affects your spells at lvl 85.

And your quote mentionned it not affecting lvl 80+, while in reality it does.

Most of these abilities have not changed for level 80+,
And besides the main point was to point out the overreaction to this whole 'zomg locks are getting nerfed' when really it is not a nerf at all and that is already pointed out in the text itself.

Agree that it was an overreaction. But obviously you missed fin's edit2, so I'll link it again (but not just the edit2 this time):

And the minor nerf is justified imho, because I was outdpsing a feral kitty guildy (I'm in ICC10 gear, he's in ICC25 (hc) gear). The outdpsing was minor, but it was there (although he kept denying it :D)

Destruction
Nether Protection now procs from damage absorption from all wards instead of just Nether Ward. When you absorb damage through Shadow Ward, Nether Ward or other effects, you gain Nether Protection, reducing all damage by that spell school by 15/30% for 12 sec.
Pet Skills
Legion Strike healing reduction changed to 10%, down from 25%.
Nether protection change is interesting, could make for some *interesting* synergy with disc priests in arenas... Unless it means only absorbs that you personally cause, in which case the change seems pretty pointless. There will obviously be some sort of ICD so you can't just keep it chaining.
Legion Strike change was expected, with all mini-MS being reduced to 10% and big MS being 25%.

I think the nether protection change is there in case your Armor gets dispelled (because then your Nether Ward becomes Shadow Ward again). Although I believe Armor couldn't be dispelled anymore in this expansion. Maybe it'll be dispellable again come Cata?

You can't dispel armor. Haven't been able to since BC.

I'm guessing Soul Link isn't included in these "other" effects. /sadface

When you
absorb
damage
soul link != absorb
Post by
Fingulfin
Technically no, but when you take damage with soul link up it DOES say "-X (Y absorbed)". Should be common sense that that isn't really an absorb, but meh =P
Post by
asakawa
oh! well if it calls it an absorb in the combat log then fair question.

"absorb" and "transfer" are two very different processes both in terms of the meaning of the words and, i'm pretty sure, the game mechanics behind the abilities.
