Will You Use RealID?

Not unless they adopt a sensible system that doesn't require me to give away my WoW account name in order to use it
And what, pray tell, do you suggest they use instead?
An alias selected by the account holder - as I (and others) have suggested in several previous threads in which you've participated. It's the system used by several other MMOs.
Okay, someone now registers xaratherus before you do.
Your friends all you know as xaratherus
They add xaratherus, but get someone that's not you
uh oh...
My friends then whisper me and ask me what I used as my global alias. I tell them; they remove Xarathreus, they add the correct global alias, and all is well.
Try again.

Or I give them an email - something that is mine and mine alone; something immutable and unspoofable - and they get me the first time
oh and they can never access that email again
problem is where

Well, just dont give your email to untrusted ppl, that's all, I've already added some ppl i play with and i know they would not be interested by hacking, cracking my account.
True that blizz should change the way you add people, or secure it.
Anyway i always ask others emails and never give mine lol

Rilgon... may I ask why you so vigorously defend RealID?
Because I'm sick and tired of people complaining about something when their complaints A) are invalid if they'd research the system, B) go against the intended design of the system, or C) have no better solution available, and the people whining sure as hell aren't submitting anything better.

It's still a crappy piece of design.
And your better design is...?
(Keep in mind that the design is to be used with people you know already, and to network with their friends. Also keep in mind that it should be simple, immutable, and non-spoofable.)

Except it already has parental controls.

The fact that there's no one on this planet that I'd want to add.
That's a problem with you, not the system.

I use Real ID and love it. A lot of the criticism is due to viewing the Real ID like a multi-toon friend list. That's not how it's intended to be used. I've linked up with a only a couple of people that I've known for a while and enjoy playing with and it's really nice to be able to see if they're online without having to friend every single toon they own - and, since it jumps from toon to toon, I won't have to hop on my main to see if they're online or not. Also, cross-server. And cross-realm, I thought, though I haven't tested that.
TL;DR: Hell yes I use it. And it's awesome.
EDIT: And if you're refusing to use Real ID because you're afraid your account will get hacked, stop being so stubborn and put an Authenticator on your account. Buy one, or download the app for your smartphone. Best protection against being hacked out there.

Simply don't use Real ID then. It's not like they replaced the friend list with it. I fully understand what you mean, believe me - there are plenty of people I can only stand for so long before reaching for a pistol. But I just haven't given them my ID.
Don't worry though, I'm willing to bet 4 figures that in the 6 weeks or so a new option comes out for the status selection that makes you invisible. I'm honestly amazed there isn't one when almost every single messenger/networking platform has them.

You've just described exactly why I don't like it. Everyone you add can see that you're online every time your online. You can say goodbye to that secret alt you play when you just want to chill out.
I would argue that if you can't tell your friend that you don't want to be bothered and have him respect that, then he's not a good enough friend to be added to Real ID.
