His girlfriend from his wife maybe?
*snerk*
Back in college, I actually dated two people at once for a while. Biggest mistake ever -- we'd go out to dinner and they'd sit there gossipping about me as though I weren't even there. :P

I'm still trying to get accurate data about what exactly is shown, because different people have made different claims about it.
Considering that I use it, I'll fill you in.
For my Direct Real ID Friends:
*Real Name (where character name would be for a non-Real ID friend)
*On Mouseover: Currently logged in character, currently logged in character's location, current realm
For my Friends of Real ID Friends:
*Real Name (only accessible by right clicking one of my direct Real ID friends and choosing "View Friends")
*In Real ID Conversations: Currently logged in character (in place of their Real Name, only if I don't have them as a Real ID friend myself)
That's it.

Thanks!

So, if that character talks to you, without using the special realid feature, you just see the character name, and get no hint that they are a FoF, but if you use realid to message them, you get the character name instead of the realid name? Trying to get a handle on this. It seems like that would, in fact, create a "leak" -- it would tell you at least one of their characters, if they responded to you, and possibly under other circumstances.
Can you initiate a message to someone and then get the character name from that, or do you get the real name only if they respond? When you message them, do they see your character name or your RealID name? Do they know whether they're responding in RealID terms or in character terms?

The only way for me to communicate with one of my FoFs,
without adding them myself
, is to have our mutual friend initiate a conversation between us.
Example time: I'm John Doe. My best buddy is James Smith, and he has a friend, Suzie Queue. Suzie is Real ID friends with James, as am I.
I can do Real ID whispers with James (/whisper James Smith), as can Suzie, but I
can't
/whisper Suzie Queue - not without adding her through James Smith's "View Friends" menu.
James Smith can create a Friends Conversation with me and Suzie. If she chats, I see the character name that she's on,
not
her name (and not anything else about that character), and she sees the same about me.
Translation: I can't talk to Suzie without James' help, or without directly adding her myself. All I can see is her name.

Can you see which of James's friends are logged in? For that matter, if James doesn't have very many friends, you can narrow Suzie down pretty fast.
If you try to add her through his menu, what does she see? Do you have any way to communicate to verify that you're talking to the right person, before adding them? I have friends with similar names...

No. Edit: I don't even see Suzie anywhere in my Friends menu, only if/when I right click James' entry in my Friends menu and hit "View Friends". And again, all I see is her name - not her online status, not her character, nothing but the name.

Basically the same thing that you see if someone tries to add you by email - a Real ID friend request with my name, and my message to you.
The only difference is that I didn't ever see your email address.

That is better, somewhat.

And you can either accept or deny, but there's no communications through that channel other than the invite message?
That's less bad than what they've previously described. Why on earth aren't the blues
explaining
this?

So do you think Blizzard will ever implement the cross-game chat feature for use with our online friends that's been one of the #1 requests for them to add to the game for the last five years, and which everyone else has implemented and provided? PSN, Xbox Live, Steam... Everyone else has a chat feature you can use to keep in touch with online friends who don't have your login name or your legal name. When do we get one?
