I'm defending it because the implementation we have now, while it has flaws, is still quite usable.
I think it's usable
for a few people
. I think there's a lot more people who think it's usable now and won't know that they were wrong until months or years from now.
Having used it - both in the SC2 beta, the PTR, and now on live, I'm so enraptured with the features that I'd rather the system be pushed out now - with its "flaws" - and allow me to use it, than to have it pushed even further back in development so that every perceived flaw can be repaired.
No one's asking them to address every possible perceived flaw. Just to remove one or two of the most glaringly obvious ones that are completely trivial to fix and which no one else has ever had in a system like this.
Remember, they had to have this active, at the very least, by Starcraft 2's release date of July 27th. Better that it be active now so that it can be test-driven and flaws and concerns can be pointed out and worked out as development time allows than to push this back even further and possibly miss the SC2 release date.
No one needs to test drive anything to point out the flaws in "and then we use your login name as the key for inviting people".

Having had time to reflect, I think the sole purpose of RealID is to cross-sell games. This is the only logical reason for the friends of friends 'feature'. I do think it would be interesting to see the demographic of those against the idea versus those who don't see the problem. I'll bet a majority of those against, like me, are of an age that remembers (fondly) the days when you weren't socially obligated to be available at all times to everyone.
Yes, I have a facebook. I almost never check it, and my privacy settings are such that only my friends can see anything on it. There's very little info there anyway, its mostly so I can see pics of my grandbabies scattered across the country. I don't give out my cell number and am perfectly content not to answer it when I want alone time.
I like being able to zone out on a character no one knows about. Why should I give that up just so I can know when someone is playing Star Craft (a game I would never play)? I'm as interested in whether my sister is playing that as I am in whether she's drinking a latte or a cafe au lait. Really, who cares?
It's all about selling more games. And I forsee it being mandatory at a future date. When that happens I won't have anyone on my friends list, unless changes are made. It's poorly thought out and invasive without needing to be. I'm PAYING to play this game, and I should have the right to play it the way I want, including incognito. For me the problem isn't sharing my login/email. It's the glaring security holes regarding children and privacy. Why is that so hard to understand?

No one opinion in the world is ever more valid than another.
I love when people say that. It shows that they fail to grasp the fundamental differences between respecting someone's right to have a different opinion, and recognizing that the facts fit one opinion better than another, more than 75% of the time. There is such a thing as right and wrong, even when dealing with things in a relative-relational mode.

I wash my hands of it. At least we who see the problem in this system are in basic agreement about what is wrong, and what needs to be done. Let those who think this is perfectly fine be the crash test dummies to keep the rest of us safe. They can take the risks, and vent their nerd rage on the fora here and at WorldofWarcraft.com after something bad happens.
Blizzard probably will change it eventually, as has been said by others here... it would be very stupid not to. Hopefully someone at BlizzHQ doesn't have too much ego to wait longer than necessary for the change. This system will get people hurt, and Blizzard will end up cleaning up some of the mess.

The fact of the matter is, as it is RealID is useless. The people you can trust are people you can contact already, including on voice (e.g. Vent, MSN, Skype, Phone) or through text. Everyone else is someone I can't fully trust.
I have the Skype and AIM info of all my Real ID friends.
I still use it because it's more convenient during raid time when I'm on Vent and can't alt-tab to talk on AIM and can't chat with them on Skype to be able to use Real ID whispers to talk to them.
