I am going mental

Hi Wowhead folk,
I am having some issues and want some guidance or advice.
Having experienced depression for the last 8 months, and more recently having anxiety attacks and paranoia, I am considering going to see a psychologist.
It is very daunting and scary; I have had friends in the past who were medicated for schizophrenia and bipolar, and I don’t want to end up like that.
Having voluntarily drifted away from friends, I am continuing to isolate myself.
I am not an acute case, but my recent behaviour and thoughts are escalating and are certainly alarming me.
What can I expect from the psychologist?

Help, support, someone to talk to who can give you advice on how to deal with life.
They may ask you to take some prescription drugs, but just remember, they're doing this for you, with your best interests at heart. It's not something to be avoided, but it might help the early symptoms, and slowly, you'll be weaned off it as you no longer need it and move out of depression.
Good luck with it all.

I am incredibly biased against medication for psychiatric purposes, because my grandmother's mind was destroyed by them when she was treated for Bipolar Disease. But, if you trust those around you, they could help get you off the ground, if used appropriately.
I really do hope your situation improves, Cambo.

Good luck. They will try and help you, but imo one of your problems was isolating yourself from your friends. Very bad idea.

Convince yourself the voices aren't real.
i also advise not to take this advice as i myself am on numerous medications for psychological disorders.
And how has that turned out? Is it as bad as I think it may be?

Well, you've got the ball rolling already...you've accepted there's a problem and made a plea for help somewhere. Try to abstain from anti-depressants if you can, I've seen people get hooked on them, as sometimes it becomes mind over matter. If I were in your shoes, I'd try to have the emotional guidance and support of a psychiatrist, and if you both think you need medication then take that step after a few therapeutic sessions.

Good news everyone!
I do not require treatment (at least the treatment I imagined).
The psychiatrist basically pinpointed some things that had been happening in my life that was unsettling me and messing with the stability and routine that I so love.
I'll address those things, make some changes and I should stop having anxiety attacks and paranoia.
/win!
