So my guild wanted to do an Ony10 run. I had never been but had heard stories, so I agreed. It... didn't turn out so well. At all. We had, as I recall:
* 1 Prot Warrior (MT)
* 1 Prot Pally (Me - OT)
* 3 Mages
* 1 DK
* 1 Resto Druid
* 1 Elemental Shaman
* 1 Holy Pally
* 1 Hunter
The first time, I tried to pick up all 40 or so of the Whelps. bad idea. They basically ran right through my Consecration without my getting any threat and started attacking everyone and everything. Then, we tried having the Warrior take one side, with myself on the other side, and then bring all the whelps into the middle. This worked a little but still I found it was VERY hard to keep aggro on all of them. I would drop a Consecration and it wouldn't really do much. Even standing right at the entrance to where they come out with Consecration didn't really matter, most still ran past me. We tried this strategy again and actually got her to Phase 3 but DPS didn't down one of the big guys fast enough so she landed before the MT could pick her back up (MT would go and grab the big guys as they showed up), and we died as she proceeded to eat us. Fourth time we barely got into phase 2 as again the whelps just swarm past me to attack healers and/or DPS.
I mean.. it wasn't a bad attempt given that I had never, ever been there before and the fight was literally explained to me a few minutes before we pulled her (it was a spur of the moment "Hey guy's I'm bored let's do Ony10!" thing), but I can't help but feel... rather "fails" as the case may be. I'm not sure what I could have done differently. I had RF on, I was using Consecration, and it seemed the whelps were just ignoring me completely; I can't really hit more than a few with Hammer and Shield, and Shield has a 30 second cooldown. Should we have had a second off-tank instead of pulling the MT away?

The problem is the way AoE attacks and their hardcap work.
Basically the amount of damage any given attack would do to 10 mobs is how much damage it's going to do. If you have a tank doing something which is affected by this but someone like a ret paladin just switching to SoComm and going to town, you're generating like 500 tps each on 40 mobs, they're generating 4k tps each on about 5 at any given time, all of which you have to go hunting for.
Actually, I'm not sure if Cons is affected by that hardcap or not, but even so, on its own it doesn't hold aggro against much of anything, except DPS who are helpfully only doing things spread out to all of the whelps.

Hmm.. yeah they were waiting, the problem is that it's rather hard to run around trying to hit some 40 whelps. There were always a couple that would "get away" and would have to be rounded up, the best attempt we made, when we got her to Phase 3, I had aggro on like 90% of them and we were able to kill them quickly with AOEs, the other times I'm not quite sure what would happen but I would have aggro on... I don't know about 10 or 12 of them and the rest would be off somewhere. I use the ThreatPlates addon to see what has aggro and what doesn't but I had to switch off the bars because the screen was so cluttered due to so many of them on the screen at once.
It was just a little frustrating because like someone said above, we all well outgeared Ony. A bit of humble pie, as it were. My multi-target attacks aren't that great when there is about 40 of the darn things as opposed to maybe 4 :) and I didn't seem to be getting "pull aggro" despite standing right near the lot of them.

Hmm if we do it again I'll have to try that (getting everyone to stack on me so they don't run wild). Thanks!

Hello,
I have done it as a Prot Paladin and switching to Retri aura for a bit seems to help.
