It can certainly help but they're not required unless your guild requires them. DBM and OMEN are good ones to have.

It's all of ten minutes of work to get some really basic, out-of-the-box, click-and-drag to the right part of the screen mods. That's something which you'll find hugely helpful throughout your entire time playing WoW, at absolutely no cost in gold or in real money. If you don't want to put even that much effort into preparing for raids, grinding heroics for a full set of T9 is going to be hell.
The question of whether they're 'necessary' should be fairly irrelevant, surely. Though for completeness' sake, they are not technically necessary. Blizzard doesn't design encounters around the premise that they should be impossible without X or Y mod.

Most raiding guilds require you use DBM (or something similar) and Omen (mostly just if you're DPS).
If you're looking for a raiding guild I would at least install DBM. It doesn't hurt and it'll help you look competent (and it's great if you tend to get tunnel vision while dpsing/healing/tanking).

lol@a raiding guild inviting in people who dont use dbm
must be one fail raiding guild you'd get into if they dont require the use of dbm.although, maybe that will be the next add on that blizzard decides to "break"
Considering they've done nothing but support mods like it for 5 years, I doubt it.

Grid is a bit of a bother to set-up first time, but once set-up to your liking, it trumps Decursive.

i just think its funny that there actually attempting to make the game harder, instead of doing what they usually do and making the game easier
Casual friendly =/= Easy. Can I ask, have you downed Lich King 25 heroic to actually claim informatively that WoW is still easy?

As everyone else as said, DBM and Omen are really useful. Try Recount if you want to know how you, and the raid, are doing. I use X-Perl as a unit frame replacement.

Whilst maybe not strictly an addon or absolutely required, vent can make life a whole lot easier when going into new content, it also can aid to the social side of raiding too which can't be a bad thing.
