I don't get it... why do people like this stuff? It's so depressing... even the upbeat stuff sounds depressing.
I just heard a song where the guy was talking about his dad and his mom. Apparently his father's life was so bad that he had to resort to drinking and his mom was a druggie... according to him, his dad decided that the best thing to do would be to kill his wife and then himself.
WTF?
Who gets off on this stuff? Don't we have enough crap to deal with in life? Why do people enjoy listening to a song about people killing themselves and leaving their kids without parents?
I certainly think that the people who like this music must be sadists or masochists. They rag on people who listen to metal and rap because of the lyrics, but come on I have never heard a depressing metal or rap song in my life and I listen to a lot of both.
I just needed to vent my frustration over this type of music. There are a few songs that are actually good like Billy Currington's Good Directions, but they are far and few between.
I'm just going to lol at you, whom are naive.
What you said basically amounted to "Hi, I listened to one song, and I didn't like it. That means I'm going to generalize my feelings about that one song to the entire genre".

Like the people who listen to metal and think all of it (every genre) is people screaming into a microphone while slamming their heads against a drum.

Heh.
Although to be honest, I listen to country quite a bit (my family listens to it) and a few of his generalizations are true >.>
However, bands like Brad Paisley and Rascall Flats generally have uplifting messages.

How are they generalizations then, much less 'true' ones?
-.-
Country is like metal. It's just that country doesn't have a set of names for each and every type of subgenre.

You know what I meant, don't confuse the issue.

Heh, it is a 'country' song, or at least, as much as any of their songs are in a genre.

Aside from Skyfire's point about massive generalizations, this is how some people deal with their problems. Blues is the same way, but people sang and played it to be happy. It's designed to be cathartic.
And not every song even has to put you in a good happy mood. Music would be terribly boring if that was the only goal of it.

As opposed to vomiting up Arthurian words in a random and unrelated pattern and slamming their head against a guitar?
At least the screamers can write a decent riff or two ;p.

Not all of them... in fact, only about 5% of them.
